I keep thinking to myself that if I was to have a choice of one item of each that we hobbyist use on a tank to really set our minds clicking on how to pull it off...

The objective here is to see how creative and efficent we could be in a minimalistic Reef tank..

What I would like to see is others ideas on this..

If you have a choice of ONE and ONLY one of each of the follwing items ( equipement ) , What would you choose and how would it be utilized

Tank -

Light -

Heater -

Skimmer -

Pump -

Sump -

Water Variation device - IE Sqwd,penductors,OM autovalve's

How would you make this work??

Im going to Poll this and see what kinda feedback we get.

I would have the following items and will list below each one to explain hows and whys ...

Tank - I would go with a Custom Tank 30" wide 30" deep 24" tall
Center Overflow so you could walk all the way around the tank.
It would have a 2 inch Drain in the overflow and Four bulk heads in the bottom of the tank for returns . ( all on check valves)

Lighting - I would have to go with a 400 watt electronic icecap ballast in a lumenarc reflector with a XM 10K bulb SE

Heater - 250 Watt Digital Proheater Titanium

Skimmer - ETSS Evolution 500 ( we only have one pump to work with here, this is a downdraft skimmer )

Pump - Sequence Reefflo Dart . This pump would be Tee'd Off to feed the skimmer and the remaining for return.

Sump - 20 Long Glass aquarium with a chamber for the Skimmer and bubble difusion.

Water Variation Device - I would have to Chose a Ocean Motion 4-way which feeds the 4 bulkheads in the bottom of the tank that I would have plumbing hidden in the rockwork. Each of the four bulk heads Spliting into 2 directions each, possibly putting penductors on them.

Going minimalist here.

20 gallon tank
50 watt halide
no heater because of the halide
crazy bubblers for flow
scrape the skimmate from the rim.

too far?

Re: Ultimate SPS Tank Challenge - How Far can you go ..

Tank - 40g breeder

Light - 250 de

Heater - none

Skimmer -a150 or RPS-3000

Pump - ehime 1260

Sump - 20gl

Water Variation device - IE Sqwd,penductors,OM autovalve's

tunze 6100 with single controller

How would you make this work??

Well stong light ,great flow and a great nutrient export.

Its easy on a small basis.

Pull minimal off in 240 sps or bigger. Now that will be something IMO.

I dont think I'd call either of those tanks minimal. THats some serious equipment on all of them. ('cept for Kent's)

here is mine:
Tank -30g Cube

Light - 250DE LM3 reflector 14k pheonix

Heater -none

Skimmer -90-F1000 Internal Skimmer H&S

Pump -1262 ehiem

Sump -20g w/fuge

Water Variation device - OM 4 way 2:2

Tank - 20Gal

Light - 36'' Tek Light (T5's)

Heater -100w Jager

Skimmer - none

Pump - MJ 900

Sump - None

Water Variation device - 2nd Mj900 with venturi on pulling air in tank

How would you make this work??
1 or 2 small fish, change 1 gallon of water a day.
No sand for easy Daily siphoning

IMO the Skimmer, Sump, and Water Variation device all make it very non minimalistic...I run my 29 without any of the three and it's doing great.

 It's almost like you guys are describing my tank. Minimalistic:p

Tank - 110G cube

Light - 400W Radium on HQI ballast

Heater - 250W Stealth

Skimmer - EuroReef

Pump - Dart

Sump - 33G

Water Variation Device - Dart flows into OM 4-way that's plumbed to 4 returns

I have a 15 set up with
cpr bak pak
1 maxi jet 900
175 20k
3 plugs for a reef tank cant get much simpler

I agree.

I could do this .

20g tank

1x175

1 mj mod .

I would just change 25% of the water daily water would come out of my 180 sps.

Guys,, yal getting off track here.

I should have stated ....

Only one pump.(no matter what size)
Skimmer has to be a without pump model. ( venturi injected or downdraft model, or airstone)

SO far CLKWRK is the only one on board...
No extra powerheads allowed....

Im just curious to see who will try this Uni Part Reef setup ......

So far 5 people think im insane!,, YAY!

50 cube

400se XM 15k

titanium 250w

bakpak skimmer

rio 32hf

10g sump

20 % water change monthly .

Ok you never said that there was a ssize limit!

Tank- 675 gallon tank 120"x36"x36"

Sump- http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/va...egory_name=36&product_id=5276&variant_id=8430

Water variation device- Surge tank fed from pump with 4" automated ball valve

This tank would have all the good principles- 45x turnover
good water quality and great light!

Man and this would be a bargin at around close to a quarter million in just what is listed above. I can hardly wait!
