can an ultra blue maxima live under T5 HO lighting. I currently have 4 over my 55 tub with individual reflectors. thinking about getting rid of 2 of them to puchase a MH. Would like to stay with my current arrangement if possible or purchase different T5 bulbs
1 18000k power glo
2 6700k life glo
1 marine glo

Certainly High quality t5 HO's are every bit as good as MH

:takes cover from angry MH supporters:

I run 8x 54w t5 over the 175 bow at school. Acros, other sps and Anemones all do well there.

not at all, you said it right. high quality T5 systems with the right parts are comparable to MH's ( light wise ) but not all T5 systems are created equal.

I know but this place has its share of zealots, just poking some fun.

I have had corceas and maximas under both T5 HO and MH's and to be honest there was not really any difference. I had the TEK light system with the individual reflectores and Geissman bulbs on a smaller tank and a MH 20k radium on my 65 both had clams that did great. Its worth the extra money IMO to get the best T5 lighting system you can. You not only cut back on heat but also the electric bill.

generally when people are trying to make a direct comparison between the two they're talking about an expensive T5 fixture with individual reflectors and icecap ballast.

lets use my tank as an example, a 120S.

using MH, i would have (2) 250W halides for a total of 500W, the comparable T5 system would have (8) 54W bulbs for a total of 432W. which is ~ a 70W difference, unless you're overdriving the bulbs with an icecap ballast, then we're talking (8) bulbs at ~ 80W for a total of 640W.

the heat issue, goes both ways too. yes, you may need to use fans to take the heat away from the tank with MH's but you also need to use fans to cool T5 bulbs to get the most out of the system and try to lengthen the life of the bulbs.

the next comparison is usually bulb life, people often say that T5 last 18 months, unless you overdrive them, then 6 months to a year ( same as halides ).

don't get me wrong, i'm not bashing T5's but all the hype about how much money you will save is overstated when compared to start up costs and bulb replacement costs. both systems have there good and bad points and you should use whichever works best for your situation.

+1 halides

fewer bulbs,
fewer cords,
fewer ballasts,
fewer fans,
fewer trips to the LFS for bulb replacements,
more space on top of the tank to create a nice open look if youre like me and HATE canopies with prejudice.

I run 1 150/14K Powerpaq in my Current fixture and I LOVE IT!

T5's do make those pretty blue colors though. lol.

comes down to your pref. i guess

Back to the original question (SO tired of the T5 vs. MH debates), YES, you can keep an ultra blue Maxima under T5s.

I've grown this Maxima from 2". It spent 11 months in my 75 (6 X 54 Watts Tek Light), and has been in my 180 since September (8 X 80 Watts Tek Lights Ready fit retros). It is now about 4.5", and located in the sandbed.
