Uncle Bill's

if you call and ask for Scott at the Uncle Bill's in Greenwood, he is the owners son and usually coordinates all of the fish rooms and other aspects with the ones around the city. I'm not sure what he would say or if he would talk about it, but in my mind he would be the one to talk to...

They opened up here 2 days ago. They don't have much in yet from what I hear, I figured I would give it a week or two to let them get some live stock in. Had a few of the club members stop in and talk to them already. It will be interesting to see how it goes up here for them

You bet. We are talking about it now. I figure there will be close to 10 or 12 of us going to that one. I just hope we can get that many of you guys to come to ours in the fall....LOL

Planning one is a little tougher than I thought it would be. More expensive to.

Yes, so we have found out as well, always trying to make it bigger and better!

Yep. I thought we were going to be able to work something out with the local kids science muesum. They wanted us to help them with the cold water tidal pool exhibit that they have. It needs major work, and they were not able to pay for any of it. They also wanted to charge $7-$10 a person for the frag swap. I told them there was no way. People won't show if it is going to be that much.

After we have had a few raffles at our meetings I think we can do one on our own, but it will be a chunk of club money. I just hope we can get some good donations for the raffle at the swap. That will help.

Uncle Bill's Update.....

Well the store has been open for a few weeks now, and several of our club members have become big supporters of them already. One of them got the mantis and I can't wait to see it...

I have not been able to make it in there yet though. I plan on trying to go in there tomorrow and check them out. I guess Joel (?) is the guy running the store for now, and have heard great things about him form you guys and from a few of them from up here. I will post what I find there tomorrow.

Well I stopped in tonight and dropped off some flyers for the club. I didn't get to talk to Joel as he was out with a few of the Indy bosses I was told. The one guy I talked to was nice.

First off the store will be cool with some awesome display tanks when they all get cycled and up and running. I hope to see some big impressive fish in there. They had a nice goby and wrasse selection tonight. Lots of nice things, just to new of tanks for me to feel right buying to much tonight. I will stop back in later this week when they get more in.

THe one thing that I noticed it price. Prices in Indy must be higher on fish. They were about $5 -$10 more on a lot of the fish. Real close to the same price on the bread and butter fish. The blue spot and the mystery wrasse were higher than we are used to up here for the same fish. The main salt store up here usually has mystery wrasses for $100 or so, Bills was $189. The blue spot was $100, not to far off from what we have been getting at $75.

I thought it was a little high. Some of the pups and kittens were high to from what I have been hearing. But none the less, they have a nice shop and I can't wait for the salt stuff to get fully stocked.

I live in Chicago and get to go to a lot of nice stores around here. Anytime I'm by Greenwood I stop in Uncle Bills. It is a pretty cool place for being a chain. Their coral selection has really improved over the years. They also have some cool fish every once in a while but I always see too many dead fish in the tanks for me to be comfortable buying from them.

BTW $100 for a Mystery wrasse is a killer price, as is $75 for a blue spot. I worked at a nice LFS for years so I know how much they cost wholesale. You guys are getting some good prices in Fort Wayne.

I got to stop in tonight after work and talk to Joel finally. He seemed like a real cool guy. Finally got to hear the plan for the fish room from some one who knows anything about the fish. I can't wait to see when they get all the tanks filled with coral. Hopefully we can get them to work with the club. Most of the other shops in town help us out, and I hope they will to. According to Joel he has to get word from the bosses in Indy yet.

So if you are reading this boss man, help out a young club..LOL

Hopefully you guys have better luck than any of the other clubs that have asked. Neither the freshwater or marine clubs in town have gotten anything in the way of support from them for a long, long time.

I used to know the original owners. I worked in Greenwood when I was younger. They would come in to my bike shop to have their kids bikes taken care of. Very nice people. I heard several years ago that (I can't remember) if the husband or wife passed away. Not sure if its the original owner now.

Its been a LONG time since I've been there so I can't really say how the store is now but when I lived in Indy I would prefer to go to PA.

I have been to the Fishers and Greenwood stores. I think they are both pretty.... The corals looked ok, but the fish did not look so hot. I was just in the Greenwood store 2 weeks ago and the fish in the wall display did not look up to pair. That is just my 2 cents.

They did mention that they had their little Uncle Bills Card to get discounts on the on sale items. And mentioned something about a frequent buyer card, might have been the same thing but not sure. One of the other LFSs up here gave us a deal like that. You got a seperate card from our membership card and you got it punched every time you spent $10. After you spend $170 you get $10 off. That hurt them for club business I think. I know that there are a few of us that still go there, but I try to shop at all the shops, or at least stop in there to show support to all the sponsoring shops.

I know that a lot of the members won't go out to Bills if they can't get a little bit of a club break from time to time.

That UB Card is basically just like a Kroger or Speedway card. Anyone can get one just by filling out an application in the store.

What I've found is that by having one of these cards (regardless of what store/type of store) all you do is pay the normal price and not have to pay the additional mark up the store has put on the product.
