Underwater lens advice?

Gonna be doing some snorkeling soon. Can some one recommend a good all around lens for shooting underwater for a cannon DSLR? Thanks in advance!:)

What kind of housing are you using? I think that might limit what lens you use. I've never used a DSLR with a housing, I have a Nikonos underwater 35mm. My favorite lens with that is the 15mm. I have a digital Olympus 5050 with an underwater housing. With that I mainly use the macro feature because it's sharp as a tack. If you are going to be taking pics deeper than 10 feet, you'll probably want to use flash to retain all your colors. There's really not one "all around lens" for underwater photography, unless you can use a wide angle zoom that has a macro setting. Problem with that is, you can't zoom when a lens is in a housing. So you need to decide if you are going to take close up stuff or wide angle shots.

The housing will fit almost any lens it's just a matter of how much I wanna pay. What do u think of something like a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM?

Not a bad lens if you have a good copy - mine was quite soft at wider apertures.

What about a Tamron 28-75/2.8?

I'm going to check out a few lenses at a camera store today. I'll keep my eye out for that lens.

Unless you're planning on a strobe system, get the fastest lens you can. I'm thinking f2.8 would be the minimum if you want to do ambient light shots underwater. A 50mm f1.8 might be a good budget choice, and the f1.4 if you have extra to spend. I would also consider a lens with macro capability, since there may be some things you want to capture close up.

You're braver than I am taking your DSLR underwater. I keep an old olympus C-4040 p&s that I use underwater. My XT (and more importantly, my lenses) stay dry. :D

I decided to go with a Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM hopefully works out good for a walking around lens also. The maker of the UW case makes a lens hook up that will work for it. I'm excited to get to use it now since all the travel arrangements are set for Moorea.
