unsuccessful recovery flash

The last week has given me a reminder on how useless my unit is and what a hassle this thing has been. It has lost its display screen/black (has a history of this) and after many attempts to use the recovery flash I have not gained any progress. Have also tried different updates. It will come on intermittently and very briefly when unplugged and replugged into power. When just left plugged in it will eventually just stay black. It has the EX 3 in it. Any other ideas appreciated. Also posted this on the GHL web site.

Best if you email GHL. I believe it's the best way of getting any type of answer back.
Have you tried changing power source?
I had an issue with one of my components and when I switched power cables, issue was resolved.
So maybe you have a busted power cord.

http://forum.aquariumcomputer.com/s...at-to-do-in-the-case-a-firmware-update-failed

if the update with ProfiLuxControl failed it is possible to update with another tool

1. download http://support.aquariumcomputer.com/...oad.php?did=48
2. save it somewhere you will find it, no installation required
3. start "flash.exe"
4. select "MB91F467D" as controller, 4MHz, navigate to the firmware file (click "open")
5. check the interface (under "set environment")
6. disconnect ProfiLux 3 from power (it is not necessary to open the enclosure and to set a jumper like it was ProfiLux II!)
7. now click "full operation" - ProfiLux still has no power!
8. plug in the DC-connector - ProfiLux has now power again and the download should start

Hint: If the update with ProfiLuxControl failed then there is maybe something wrong with your connection from PC to ProfiLux 3. Please ensure that your connection is stable and reliable before attempting to update with ProfiLuxControl or this tool, e.g. check the USB driver and update it if possible.

switching the power off and on produces a reset in the ProfiLux 3, after this reset the ProfiLux listens for 2 seconds if there comes a new firmware from this tool

maybe the reset is not as clear as expected or you loose the USB-connection during this reset

there is this solution:
- open the housing
- ProfiLux has power (and the power is not removed during the following!)
- plug a jumper on the 2pin-header on the ProfiLux-Front PCB (there is only one place where a jumper can be plugged) - ProfiLux is now in reset state
- click "full operation"
- now remove this jumper in the next 2 seconds - the reset condition ends and the download starts

What was the condition of your unit before you tried to perform flash recovery? You indicated that your display was blank. Did the display itself blank out or was it blank due to lack of power to the unit as doggydoc suggests? Were you trying to upgrade the firmware when it blanked out?

Tried this method several times now and no better

was given a replacement power cord (only thing ever done by GHL or the LFS I got it from) and it made no difference.

The pin only refers to P3N not original P3. The jumper movng on the P3N is to tell the micro controller you are using USB.

If you have P3 the is no jumper.

If your controller screen is going black this has nothing to do with a firmware update and is more to do with a hardware issue, no amount of firmware attempts will rectify this.

Please revert back to the support forum and original thread for direction.

You can replace power cords but you still need to check if the power supply is functioning. You have not reported if you have power coming from the power supply.

Seems that when I read through some of the flash posts that people had blacked out/no screens and the flash corrected this.

To what are you referring ? Not the wall plug-in I hope, sorry not clear on what you mean. I have also tried other power cord adapters.

Did you check if you are getting 12VDC at the output of the AC/DC adapter? A voltage meter would be the easiest way to check this.

Correct BUT only after failed upload where they then have to use the flash tool to recover the firmware, in your case your unit is randomly going dark which points to a power issue on the main board. Possible DC DC converter.

Sent you an e-mail - thx

So I'm going to send in my controller for repairs. I'll post what the problem was and how the customer service went. This has been a long drawn out ordeal and have been very unhappy to this point. Hope Michael sets it right.

Mike,
Hope it's not too late to help you here. I don't think you have to send it out. When you failed the firmware update and flash is not working, the LCD of the profilux goes blank. Looks like a dead unit with no power. However, if you turn your speaker up on the computer, plugging the power and disconnecting it should make a sound. Just like when you connect a device via usb to your computer. If you hear this sound, the unit is still powering. The memory in the profilux is just in chaos and waiting for something to wipe it out and download new codes into it.
Flash ONLY works with a serial R232 connection. No matter how hard you try with the USB, it will not work. You either have to find an old computer with serial connection or get a serial to USB adaptor.
