UPDATE of your ONYX clowns

I got lucky finding an onyx small enough to pair with my female.

The female occasionally chases the male away, but she lets him sleep close to her. They have been together for about a week or so.

so an onyx clown is one that has his second stripe of white surrounded by black!? someone please explain this to me!! my lfs gets them all the time if so and he charges like 24 bucks! this is coming from a guy who thinks pink zoas are rare!!!

Here's my juvenile pair. The male is one that I have posted before. Paired him up with another female that I thought would match him better....

awesome pics everyone.

marine betta, great black on your clowns.! how long have you had them? did you buy from a lfs also? oh i see your from singapore. its alot of good onyx breeders are from singapore.

rbdesigns, great pics. it seems reefers in calif. often find onyx clowns at there lfs. that original pair you got. was from la. how long ago did you purchase them?

i really like the pattern of the 3rd bar on those onyx.
you make me tempted to order a pair from la.

i only have one onyx pair and i got them from Rod Beuler, a reef central member. hes one of the rare successful onyx breeders in the country. i find his onyx have a very unique body shape and color intensity that i personaly prefer, but the orignal pair you recd from LA are also very nice. i jsut have not heard of anyone who has had an onyx pair for an extended duration of time from la.

does anyone one else have an onyx clown with the triangular shape in the 3rd bar?

the fact that your original pair both have that triangular shap in the third bar, leads me to the think that its a good possibility this pattern is genetically reproduceable. which is a great thing. :)

the more i see other onyx clowns the more i start to appreciate little diff. in there body patterns.

Ok here's the update on my clowns. They are about 1 year old and both are hosting in a BTA. They are sleeping in the same BTA but my BTA recently split and during the day they go separately between both BTA's. I got these from Rod, I hope that all their stripes fill out one day. They have been cleaning rocks near the BTA but I still think their too young yet. we'll see

very nice, ez.

i think i got my clown pair about the same time from rod also.!

i notice the black is coming in on yours very n icely. the doral fin is developing well. i like that about rods onyx.

his seem to develop more black than most onyx.

thanks for sharing
thank you for sharing.

Just got these little guys last week from my LFS. They seem to get a LOT in.

Seems like they'll host my BTA but my saddlebacks took it from them. As soon as I can remove my last Clarkii they'll have three other anemones to choose from.

where and how much did you pay for them at the lfs?

where are these fish stores?hehe

it would be a dream to see onyx at lfs along east coast.

i've never seen a onyx at an LFS in the michigan area, well maybe once but they were NFS.

what do ya think about the tail stripes?

ez can you get more clear pics? of your onyx

since we both have rodb. s clowns i really want to compare.

with regard to the tail strips. my gut feeling is that they will not develop white. but the way rods onyx develops there black. you should end up wiht full black thru the 3rd bar area, which i think will look pretty awesome.

yoru onyx dones seem to have as much black towards the belly. what do you feed your clowns?

i also got another onyx from rod that did not develop black in the 2-3rd bar and i dont think it ever woudl of. it recently passes away.

but yorus seems like the black will eventually cover most of the body.

but im still learing about rods onyx so i hope im wrong about the tail stripe. i plan on obtaining a few more pairs from rod in his next batch so i ll be able to tell you more. i take pics of my clowns evey month to doc. there color dev.

pleaese take more pics if you can

thanks

yeah, no problem. I'll get more photos. Sure that sounds good, a family photo album so to say. That would be cool if they did fill in with all black.

I'm thinking of getting another pair from someone else just so I can have another pair and swap the males for diversity. Know of anyone, but I want this pair to be Picture perfect. (all three stripes and everything)

give me a day or two for pics

I'll post pictures of my little juvenile Onyx later tonight, just to give this thread a bump so I don't have to search for it later. ;)

awesome clowns exhoop!

my reason for doing this thread, and future threads to update clowns every 6 months or so is for all of us onyx owners, so we can track the progrss of our clowns and others as they develop :)

thanks for the pics :)

I spoke too soon and my battery died on my digital. This was the only shot I could get before it died. :)

I'll get some better ones very soon.

He's a tiny, tiny juvenile at just an inch. He already has most of his coloration. His dorsal may or may not develop black, but being that he's so young I don't doubt it will. He also a nice black striping on his second dorsal.

I bought him for $18, could have bought the pair for $39 but I didn't like the coloration of the others. We get them in all the time down here, it just takes patience to find the perfect specimen. I will look around for the next few weeks to find him a mate. I'm assuming he will have the role of male because I don't think I'll find a mate smaller than he is... :)

He still has quite some time to color up and I have high hopes that given the right diet he'll blacken up that first dorsal. Gorgeous little fish though.
