now you can see a timeline (although a little backwards) of my clowns color development.

those are beautiful! so what are the coloration patterns of a "perfect onyx"?
i love the dark edgings on their pectoral fins.

looks like i'm a proud owner of a onyx pair just got them an hour ago from RandallGoby with a great price of 75 shipped.

birdman, thats a great deal. do you see the diff. in color between your two clowns? the deeper orange......

i know its all in personal taste but i prefer. onyx with taht deep color orange and very dark black. i also prefer a clown with thick white strips.

does randall goby have anymore? or was he selling to you as a hobbyist?

ezhoops. yours seems to be developing fine. i use to feed my clowns heavy once a day and there bellys would ballon out to a point there they look like they are sinking. now i feed small amts as often as i can to keep them thick and attain max. growth.

i also noticed when i fed them with freeze dried cyclop. it would ballon there stomachs very fast. where as pellets/frozen was as noticeable.

i agree i also want to mix the gene pool but at this point i just want to get a pair of breeding onyxs. so as far as quality in my opinion .rodbeaulers clowns are the best. i ve bought pairs from lfs, wild caught SI pairs, etc. and none of them come close to the quality i seek as in rods. keep in mind i only bought one pair from rod so my opinion is based only on them and pics ive seen from others hes sold to.

to me a high quality onyx is one with significant black, the top dorsal fin black, belly black. thick body. again keep in mind this is personal taste. but this is what i seek and rods clowns have a higher tendency to display these qualities.

embryoguy

ya i did see the different coloration between the 2, but at this price i couldnt pass up this deal. so far they are very active, but it seems that when they sleep the female goes with the bta, and the male sleeps on my red blasto's so looks like they sleep in twin beds for now. but they are very young so we'll see how they develop. i dont really know if he's a breeder or not i was just browsing and found him selling a pair. in a picture had more than 2 onyx so you might want to PM to see if he has more.

birdman, you got a great deal. congrats. they are beautiful.

"perfect" is in the eyes of the beholder. for my personal taste, i like alot of black along the pec. and dorsal fins.

thanks for info. birdman ill give him a pm.

This is a great thread. I am really trying to research the differences between all the black clownfish variants and this thread has been quite helpful.

Does anyone know of a reliable online retailer, or a LFS in the midwest to get a black variant Oscellaris? I want a clownfish that will become completely black and white (or almost) with time. It seems to me that the Oscellaris will accomplish this whereas the Onyx Percs will always retain some orange coloration.

Here's a pair I picked up from Liveaquaria at the end of June. They are hosting in a Green Hairy Mushroom. They are doing really well now and have grown larger in the two and a half months I've had them. The male had a bacterial infection on his tail in the first weeks but it's better now. I had to take him out and hand treat him, on some very good advise, with Mercurochrome. The female quite eating for a week a while back but started up again and is nice and fat now. Have no idea what was wrong with her she just layed in the Mushroom for a week and didn't look good.

they look beautiful.

ask your lfs to order a pair of black osc. for you. they are pretty common now. just make sure you get full white strips on it.

as far as your onyx., i find that when i feed them too much there stomachs get bloated and they dont swim around alot. i think its better to feed them a small small amt but often.

if you always keep them a hungray they will be more active. its like exercise for humans. id rather have a fit fish than a well fed coach potatoe! ehhe

good luck.

thanks for posting pic. beautiful clowns. good job treating them to health.

for a predominantely black variant. i would buy from Live Aquaria. ive heard good things and they have a good policy.

they often have black clowns.

I purchased an onyx from Pasadena Trop. Fish about 3-4 weeks ago. Unfortunately it kicked the bucket about a week later.

It took me 3 days to get over the depression. I was looking forward to pairing him/ her up in the near future.

Now I have to hunt one down again. This sucks.
Anyone have a juvenile to sale or know of a LFS that has any?

liveaquaria.com has them but i would not personally recommend them. i do not know anyone that has a pair past 1 yr. it seems they have a high risk of developing dis.

rodsreef.com is who i would personally recommend. but i belive hes not selling at this time. you can call him and inquire.

be patient and save some money. or you might get lucky @ and get a good deal somwhere.

as far as i know, rodsreef.com is the only person i know that is breeding and selling onyx in the us.

hopefully im wrong but no other breeder im aware of with high quality onyx.

you llbe very happy with it. his clowns develop alot alot of black. more than any other onyx ive seen from anyone/where else.

and most likey you wotn have to treat it for bacterial infections lke others. LA gets them wild and i surmise tahst the reason. his packaging is great also.

mine were feeding within 2 hrs that i placed them in my tank.

did yours host to anything immediately? i'm planning on getting an rbta for her.
here she is, i already told rod her name will be Marge and i'm getting a Homer later when his next batch matures enough to sell.
onyx_big.jpg

her 3rd bar is forming and hopefully her dorsal will fill out, that's what i really want to see :)

mine hosted in a hairy muschroom colony :) wait until you see how the black dev.s i would take a pic of it every 2 months so you can watch its black dev.

you will notice the top dorsal will become completely black. a classic trait of rods onyx.
