UPDATE of your ONYX clowns

Does anybody know what would make the black fade once it develops? My male has lost a good bit of the black between the last 2 stripes but seems healthy otherwise (spawning started after the fading). I had taken pics of the pair right after I got them and they had complete black. The black faded on both but the females came back after a few months. They had been in a pc-lit tank, mine is MH-lit. That's the only difference I'm aware of, even their gbta moved with them. I've had them for 18 mos now.

catdoc,

jhartman mentioned in a thread about fading, so hopefully he ll see this thread or maybe you can pm him directly concering it. my other suggestion is to ask oama.

food and water chemisty is my only possible explanation for this. w/ kois i know that genetics can cause certain kois to develop better color as they grow, while others fade thru time and age. does this apply to clownfish? not sure. but hopefully others can give a better explanation.

what are you feeding them? maybe the change in diet from the former owners is a potential cause. i feed all my clowns a heavy diet of frozen mysis, enriched w/ selcon/garlic and cyclop.

sorry couldnt give you better insight on this.

my salinity is also at around 1.024-1.025. i was contemplating

lowering it down to 1.023 bec im moving away from corals and towards fish/rock only tanks.

SNOOKUMS- What type of lighting do you use? Your RBTA looks amazing!..Didnt mean to hijack the thread..uh, yeah!..nice Onyx everybody!! :)

Embryoguy - Did your other onyx ever develope the rest of the black? You mentioned in the first post that only one of your rod's clowns developed like that and the other one did not. I'm just wondering if it is just taking longer to develope.

no it never did, but i lost it after 1.5 yrs. maybe it would of maybe not. my feeling is that it would never develop its black btn 2/3rd strip. you can tell when it might based on a blackish shadow, but it never had this.

keep in mind, all of rods clowns are not 100% onyx. even though the majority of them are. and they are the best quality clowns ive seen. i currently have 5 pairs of onyx. and rods onyx are some of my best ones.

typically rod does not sell his clowns until they reach a certain level of development, but he has released some babies recently into the market but does it mean 100% of them will develop full onyx? in my opinion, defeintly not. but they are not my clowns. only rod can address this appropriately.

but for captive bred clowns, his have the highest probability of attaining that "onyx" trait we all want.

i will purchase another pair of rods clowns but only after they are furhter along in development.

wow you guys make me want onyx SO bad

Me too. I'm setting up my first tank and I hadn't thought much about stocking yet, but since I'm sort of local, I think a pair of Onyxes are a no-brainer.

gvibes, you need to take a road trip to Dekalb! :D

My Onyx are doing great and starting to get the great coloration as they mature. Although, I'm not sure whether they will finally pair off with each other or the Picassos that I stupidly put into the same tank a few months ago.....

I had this bright idea, big tank, two anemones and sure two pairs of clowns.... It doesn't work that way, but I'm stupid! :(

After fighting for a few weeeks, they are paired up for now... But, it's one of each.

ony.jpg

Its been a year now so i thought i would post a new pic.
