Hey i want to uprgade the JBJ 12 Gal pump in my tank. What should i uprgade it to? Im thinking around 600 or 900? I am really lookin for one that wont put out alot of heat. Heat is already a problem in my tank.

I was going to ask what the gph on the stock pump was in a 12dx. Is it 108??? I replaced mine with a 900 and it didn't seem to push any more water through. I know people talk about putting a 900 in but it certainly didn't feel that different. I may be wrong though...

i have the MJ900, it is a step up from the stock pump. but i would still like more flow. the MJ900 pushes as much water as will flow through my hydor, i think a second pump with a spraybar is a good option.

but for the mj 900 you would have to put it in the display part of the tank instead of in the 3rd compartment in the back? Im looking for one to put in the back compartment and still use the same flow nozzle thats already there instead of putting it in the display part of the tank.nc2tarheels can i see a pic of ur tank?

Go with the Maxi 1200. That way you are sure to get some good flow and if it's too much (which you'll find it isn't for most corals) you can always restrict the flow. I have always used Maxijets and they outlast all others. The 900 you will wish you had gone the 1200 later.

yeah but i heard the 1200 compared to the 900 gives off alot of heat and heat is already killing me.

thats right...the 1200 will heat up your tank bigtime. The real reason people switch to the MJ900 is it produces less heat than the stock pump. You do get slightly more flow but not that much.

I am running 2 1200 in my 20 and my temp doesnt heat up any because of them. Maybe you had a defective pump/ The 1200 doesn't run any hotter than the 900. The motors are the same, just different sized impellers and housings. They are one of the coolest running PH on the market.

Aquarium Systems web site says:

MJ900 8.5 watts
MJ1200 20 watts

I have never used the 1200, so I can only go by what others over on nano-reef.com have said and the simple math of disipating the heat from over twice the power consumption.

FYI, I just removed the 1200 from my 24 due to heat issues. A steady 3 degree raise was too much. I went down to a 600 with a hydor and now virtually no heat issues. Of course this is wholely dependant on what you have in your tank. I have no corals that demand high flow, except my Xenia Elongata, and the 600 is aimed directly at her.

Just my 2 cents.

Just get a metal halide retro put into the hood and then the MJ1200 will be the least of your heat worries!

I have a MJ1200 and a 75w MH along with the 2 24watt PC in the hood (with extra cooling fan mod). The tank stays at like 81F during the day. That is acceptible to me since that temp will not really cause any negative affects especially considering the benefits of the increased flow and light. But then again YMMV!
