Upscale Aquaticcs (Plainfield) rip off

I usually don't like to post these things but it sux when this happens and I figured I would give a heads up.

I needed some putty quick today to set my new coral. Upscale was the closest shop that had some. My wife offered to go and off she went. Yes normally it is like $7.50-9$ a tube.

She came home and they charged her $22.30. It didn't even have the label in it so now I am hopeful it is the real stuff.

Yes they made an extra 15$ off me today. What they probably do not realize is they will never get another penny.

Anyway rant off. Be warned............

Ted

I use AquaMend from Home Depot (Paint Section). $3.00 a tube and works great. I know 3 other people who use it for corals as well.

I've walked thru the place 3 times since they've opened. I guess I keep hoping they'll get a bit more realistic. It would be nice to have a LFS nearby that is worth a darn. You guys up north don't know how good you have it.

There's some many good stores out there, I don't understand how practices like that can continue. You would think that their customer base would just dewindle. My only guess is that they prey on the newbies (or spouces who don't know better).

they are not going to be around long. There other stores closed probably for the same reasons, there hacks and con artists. I feel sorry for the live stock in that place

yeah there livestock does not look good. I live down the street from them and don't step foot in the place unless I'm absolutely desperate. Also prices are through the roof as mentioned.

it's too bad... it would be awfully convenient for us Plainfield reefers, or what's left of us

Bryan,
If my memory serves me, he's not very far from you....I'm surprised you guys haven't met.

yeah we checked that place out once, decent enough store but yeah crazy prices and not too friendly...

I agree with the prices but the people working there have always been real cool with me to deal with. But if you're sensitive to a little ribbing they dish out then i guess you can interpret it that way.

I always maintain that stores that gouge are best avoided.
Gouging is gouging is gouging. Starvation by not shopping there works best.

I am totally against the Walmarts of the world, and will sponsor a neighborhood store first all the time, long before I go to a chain if I can help it.

But in my opinion, there's a world of difference between Rod's Reef, Shotank, Shark's Reef, even SeaSchorr, and the slightly higher priced deep reef, when compared to Living Seas or Upscale.

Sorry, personal boycott. I live in Naperville, work in Rosemont, so Plainfield is a quick jot, but I refuse to visit so long as their prices remain obscene as stated...or unless the owner comes online to make an invite to share his..."Value"

Totally agree, i don't understand how a lot of the stores around the schaumburg area stay in busines...their prices are CRAZY! I don't mind window shopping at those places.

TP5056 - me sensitive...lol...you must not see a lot of my posts...

I would have to agree, Upscale is way over priced. I am live reasonably close to there and I stop by maybe once a month. My wife and I go in and just window shop, she asked once why I didn't buy a fish/coral and I tell her that I can get it anywhere else for 30 to 50 percent less. I mostly see familys in there that are thinking of setting up a tank but are not quite sure of the cost/maintenance it will take. I like to listen to the conversations that transpire, the people working there are not too far off on the info they provide, but they scare them away with the price. As far as prices, I saw a standard sailfin tang for $69 and small sps colonies that were plauged with bubble algea for $90. No Thanks!

I also thought the prices were a little excessive especially for what they were selling. How many times have we seen silver tip xenia for $40 frags?! I had to throw out most of mine when I moved from salt lake city because there was no one to take it!

I too live in plainfield and would like to see a store out there, but unfortunately I am not in the market for anything at the moment... In fact I need to clean house a little bit before I get anything new... Its getting crowded!!!

im inplainfield and usually go to reefs edje over on 135 and 53
prices are resonable on some stuff but selection is limited

Where abouts is it on 135th and 53? I'm on the west side of Romoeville (practically Plainfield) and was trying to figure out where that shop was located.

bryanth73,

sorry I've been away from the forum for a couple of days due to my 180g upgrade! Should actually have water in it soon.

I'm in Clublands subdivision...not far from Plainfield South high school. Drop me a PM sometime.
