Urchins eating zoa's

Anyone ever have an urchin munch on their zoa's? I have had this urchin for almost a year and he has not bothered palythoa's, gsp's, or a combination yellow polyp/zoa rock. I acquired two zoa frags about two weeks ago with approximately 20 polyps each. Came home tonight and there was the urchin positioned on top of one of the frags. After I chased him off, it appears that he had munched about 75%. Besides scouring coralline, he has done a good job with algae control. After this apparent episode, I wonder if it is time to find him a new home. BTW the urchin is the typical long-spined variety (Diadema).

The frag appeared to be healthy with all polyps open this morning, approximately 12 hours prior. The remaining base tissue looks good and the polyps he missed opened up about 5 minutes after I chased the urchin off.

A guy in our club had the same experience with zoas and GSP. I've got an orange 'eye' diadema, but haven't had many problems yet (not many zoas in that tank, though).

never heard of that before. i imagine there was something on the zoas that made him go for them. and in the process of eating whatever was on them, devoured the zoas also.

i dont have any diadema urchins, but know people who do and they dont have any problems.

ive got two of these wild urchins. they hitch-hiked on a wild blue zoa frag/colony rock i got. were the size of a pencil eraser a year ago, and are now the size of golfballs. besides moving large rocks around, and knocking frags all over the place, they are nice to have....i just hope they dont get much bigger...:eek2:
