URGENT: Possible sick clown...

Well...even though my WC water was 1.008, somehow my QT tank SG ended up at 1.013

I've been adding a few cups of RO here and there and got it back down though.

Alright...it's been a couple of days, so here's a quick update before I head to bed.

Both fish seem to be acting a bit healthier every day, spending less and less time breathing heavily and sitting on the bottom. Both are also eating. I plan to start diversifying their diet over the next couple of days by trying to feed Formula 1 Flake, Reef Herbivore Pellet, ORA-Glo pellet, and frozen Mysis. Not all at once, of course, but I figure it can't hurt to get them something different.

Also I've heard of clowns becoming "hooked" on a food and ignoring anything else, and I know how important variety is in the diet of a fish.

Thanks for the update Tyler :)

Variety is definitely a good thing, but I have yet to have mine get hooked on anything to the point of ignoring food. In fact, wait until they mature, settle in, and the female attacks your hand the first time....talk about shocking :D

*sigh*

Looks like I spoke too soon. Today both fish are doing a bit of their tipping action, once again the male worse than the female.

I wonder if maybe the deformed gill plates have anything to do with why the male is having a tough(er) time?

Deformed? Did I miss a detail somewhere?

My little male has bent/deformed gill plates that often occur in CB clowns. I've never heard of that causing a health problem for the fish, but I wonder if it could be a contributing factor with this one.

It does not sound like a contributing factor to me, if it was a harmful abnormality, I imagine it would have died during growout.

As would I...but I can't help but wonder if it makes it easier for any parasites to get a foothold in his gills.

Perhaps the best news yet (as far as the fish go), both clowns readily ate a bit of flake food during their last meal. Not only did they eat flake, but they ate bits off of a larger flake that I was holding between my fingers :)

And also some bad news...we lost the family cat today. After 15 years with us, Fuzzy, the wonderful cat that I've had since the age of 4, has finally passed on. She died sleeping in the sunshine in one of her favorite spots. Not a bad way to go, if you ask me.

Rest In Peace, old friend, may you forever lounge in the sunshine of the Great Porch in the Sky.

Another small update...both clowns eating like pigs, and while i was siphoning for the WC today the female came up and started nipping at my thumb. :)

Not so much an aggressive nip, but a "Hey...this isn't food..."

I'm thinking that things are looking up as well...I sure hope they'll be okay.

It's crazy to think that a few days ago I was sure they wouldn't make it, and now they seem like they'll be just fine! I can only keep doing what I've been doing and hope that they continue to improve.

It sounds like you are further forward then just hoping ;>) Keep up the good work.

Sorry to hear about the kitty, at least it was peaceful.

This is my first molt...scared the crap out of me to look into the tank and glimpse a huge scary lookin thing that wasn't there yesterday.

My first thought was that something crazy had crawled out of my rocks and was about to stab me in the face.
Then I thought the peppy had died.
Then I saw the peppy and I was like "Oh...I'm dumb."

well i am glad everythings going well for you man..my clowns are being picked on by a royal dottyback so i am gonna get rid of it..my g/f picked it out and wanted it cause it was "cute" and when he got into the tank he was timid now my clowns are stuck to one side of the tank and just chillin there but...other than that things are great, but good looking on your clowns, at least things are looking up now...keep it up!

Yeah, things are definitely improving. They've got from not eating at all, to eating absolutely everything I give them. They have been chowing down on flake, the ORA-Glo pellets, and everything else.

We're certainly not in the clear yet, as they still spend some time here and there on the bottom of the tank, but not nearly as much, and it's certainly a good sign that they're exhibiting a more clown-like appetite.
