I'm bought some small pieces of live rock yesterday. I've head of some using ginger ale to mix it with water to rinse the rock in a bucket before putting it in. How many bottles or cans do I need for a 5 gallon bucket?

? I am not sure if you are serious or joking. I have never heard of this. I also did a quick search and got nothing. What on earth are talking about?

Don't do that to your live rock. Some people will freshwater dip rocks to run out the hitch hikers. Sometimes if there is a mantis or gorilla crab and you know he's in there, you can put soda water down his hole to flush him out. I think you got these two things crossed up maybe. I've never heard of dipping a rock in ginger ale. Isn't there phosphoric acid in ginger ale? That would be very bad. Or good if you are an algae.

Maybe not ginger ale. But something that creates bubbles so if there are any unwanted visitors in the live rock, it'll get them out. Supposedly the bubbles make them come out of their hiding place

Oh no, don't dip the whole rock, but you can fill a hole if you need to run something out. Just make sure to rinse it out a little.

If you want to dip the whole rock, use RO/DI for 5 - 10 minutes. It will melt aptasia and run out most hitch hikers, but not really kill off that much bacteria.

you can also did the rock in water with a sg of 1.010 and that will get the nasties to come out and won't kill the rock.
