UV Sterilizer....good or bad?

x2 on heat

x2 on heat

UV + powerhead to push water through it = heater

ESPECIALLY noticeable in acrylic reef aquariums because acrylic is a good insulator

If I use a 36w on a 125 it would take alot for the tank just to warm up a degree wouldnt it? And since i have a steady cyano problem it would be conveinient right now to get one. Once my tank reaches possiby a year old I planned to start reduceing flow and eventually shut it off all together.
Does this sound good or should I let the tank run its course?

It's your tank ,your call and your money. I think everyone has tried to share enough information to help you make and informed decision. Good luck.

UV will have little to no effect on your cyano problem.
36W UV + it's associated pump can have a significant impact on your aquarium's temperature depending on how it's set up.

So often the CONVENIENT solution is not the APPROPRIATE solution.

Your money is better spent elsewhere IMO.

I do think my money is better spent else where with all the info I have read and all of you have provided. I am probly put the money twords more live stock then and just keep scrapin and sucking that cyano out. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE, it was very informative and I didnt know I was gonna spark this long of a conversation. Its a great thread to come back to for future referance. Thanks again!!!

Check your PO4. if it's high try some gfo or another phospahte remover. It helps kick cyano out along with siphoning. Running some gac( granulated activted carbon ) should help too.

Thanks tom.I know the PO4 is a little high and the tank is still young so I know its gonna take some time for the cyano to get kicked out. I just put a big order into bulk reef supply for more gfo and carbon mainly because I also have a flatworm problem and I ordered the salifert flatworm exit and apparently when flat worms die the release a toxin into the water. The carbon is supposed to take the toxin and neutralize it because it is harmful in big quantities to the fish. Different topic though.....thanks again

Goodluck. gfo can get pricey. If you use a lot you may want to search up the thread in this forum on regeneration. I've actually reached a point with vodka and vinegar dosing where I don't use gfo anyomore(broke the habit about a month ago and PO4 is holding <.04ppm).Still use gac in smallamounts contiuously though.
