Vanessa's 60g Peninsula Tank Build

Yikessss....we're stuck:worried:

Wait a minute, you're setting up a reef system at the moment, and you already bought corals? hmmmmm....Im confused. :eek1:

Pictures updates??????

Cajal is the best name

She works at a research lab with multiple tanks set up. So, if im not mistaken, the coral she bought is in one of those tanks. For now.

pictures coming soon.. been slow as we found out a semesters worth of data collection was laid out wrong on a spread sheet so i have been busy doing actual work instead of working on my tank. i hate real life.

you are in fact correct !

Oh, I see. We'll just have to be patient I guess:beachbum: Wowwww, a semester worth of data??:thumbdown ......

Ehhhh, dont hate the real life, because without it, you won't have the "fake" life !:crazy1:

well, i have done absolutely nothing visually productive except help Xavier with his fish tank....
but i did buy pvc components for the drain. and a bucket. and i decided i am going to just figure out a way to get that 20 gallon tank in there. IT IS GOING TO FIT.
also a valve for easy water changes. woohoo !! xavier lost me in the mumbo jumbo but i think he said its splitting off of the......... drain pipe............? im such a great listener.

also, i bought a skimmer ! yay ! it is a tunze... something. i am too lazy to look it up and my brain is fried from this heat.

although i did draw up some more plans so i can upload those later.... like i said my brain is fried it has got to be past to 80 degrees in my living room right now.

thinking about that..... is it going to be a problem with my fishtank that it gets really hot in my house for like 3 weeks of summer ?

It will be off of the drain... And im pretty sure I will be utilizing the same idea, so thanks for that :)

also, the skimmer is a Tunze Doc 9006 if I remember correctly, which if anything, should be a overkill for the tank. Yay for low nutrient levels!

Good luck with the 20 g. You can do it, you can do it
PVC and bucket is productive enough. I can't wait to see the drawing of the plans. Yup, it's been crazy hot here too. Some people can get away with fans (just like someone mentioned), but some ppl are unlucky and have to get a chiller or have room temperature (AC).

so all the progress ive made is put things in my shopping cart on various aquarium websites and not purchase them...... but i think my birthday weekend is a valid excuse. :hb2:

however, i officially have paid for a skimmer.

i shall eventually buy tropic marin sea salt.
looking at this <a href="http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4590"> Supreme Classic Mag Drive Pump 700 (MD7)</a>
and this <a href="http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=23726">Jager Thermostat Heater</a>
aaaaaand this <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007480AP6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER"> heater controller</a>

.....any suggestions ? thoughts ? hoping to find this stuff on craigslist or someone selling something similar here for less...

....looking into lights. not really sure where to start so i shall find a LEDs for dummies thread.

i also decided to cover the overflow with rockwork/shelves- i saw a thread on it. i want to maximize tank space so ill put some nice natural looking shelves or something in there.

ill post some pictures of my tank tomorrow, i have it in its final resting place. (ROOMMATES MOVED OUT WOOT WOOT). still havent finished the hood, just started cooling down again so i can make it back on my deck without passing out.

Do more research in your area for your salt mix. The cheapest that I found was Instant Ocean. Mag Drive pump is good. Jager heater is excellent (very reliable, easy to calibrate, and I never had problem with it). I wouldn't recommend buying used heater.

As for heater controller, I never used it honestly. If you have a little more $$$, you might look into the "real" controller, which will monitor your pH, Temperature, Salinity, etc. Research Reef Keeper and Apex controller.

The cheapest LED fixture that I know would be AI sol (used). You can find them for $200 - $250 per fixture.

I can't wait to see that.

The best feeling ever....I know how it feels woot woot:dance:

now that i am feeling less lazy.... here are some pics. ignore how messy my desk is, school just started last week and i havent even put together a binder yet....:hmm2:
<img src="http://i1314.photobucket.com/albums/t575/vanessaraejohnson/IMG_7930_zpseeec2511.jpg" width="550" height="450"></img>
so basically the idea is that you can enjoy the tank from the desk (aka procrastinating homework) and enjoy it from the futon (aka procrastinating reading assignments)

and i didnt feel like finishing my hood today even though i got out of class at ten am:rollface: maybe tomorrow........

@green_lionfish- what do you mean cheapest in my area ? (at risk of sounding like a dummy..... :fun5:) i also heard that if you spend a wee bit more on salt you might not have to spend as much adding in other nutrients- which is why i was going with tropic marin since it seemed the most complete ! please correct me if i am wrong !

regarding the heater controller i am an anxious freak and i dont want to accidentally fry my tank because of some stupid one in a million chance that something goes wrong with the heater. as for the real controller..... to me, that seems like a cop out ! half the fun is testing your water with the little test strips and droppers :lol2: could be the lab tech in me though.

stupid joke......

stupid joke......

hey i got my first fish ! a cat fish !

Well, may be in San Diego it's different. May be Tropic Marine is cheaper than Instant Ocean. I have used all different kind of salt, and in my experience I don't see too much difference. At the beginning, I dont really dose/add anything except keeping up with the water changes. Once it's established and has nice coral growth, then I started dosing Calcium.

As for the controller, to me it's not a cop out at all. If that's what you like to do, then it's your choice. Been in hobby for a while, and have been testing for a while. I remember how I used to do the test every single day. YIIKKEESSSSS......So if I can save some of my time, I will. There are a lot of things that you can do with that controller besides precaution measures. Do you have to have it? No. Is it recommended? Yes.

Also, just because you have the controller, doesn't mean you won't be testing Calcium, Alkalinity, Magnesium. LOL The controller will eliminate some of the testing, but more importantly, it's safety and redundancy .

Where can i get this specific cat fish species? Is it part turtle?

Anyways love the penisula. Can't wait to see it come together.

school started, i got busy, decided randomly that i was going to graduate on time (yay) so i had to completely redo my entire class schedule. now things are settled down so i can get back to the lonely tank in my office....

just received my skimmer today from thegrun ! thanks so much

and then i got really excited and splurged and bought a heater, controller, and pump....

and especially now that the tank at my work is shattered, not sure how permanent of a home we can have for the pajama cardinal, wrasse (if he makes it) and the shrimp, since the department is now out at least 400 dollars, so work away i shall to get this thing up and running !

i also totally forgot about my sump dilemma :headwalls:
back to the drawing board

Interesting thread, can't wait to see your tank running! By the way, since you are in San Diego, have you thought of using the Scripps NSW to start your tank?

thanks ! i have but i work at a university and i have access to free RO/DI water- i think the gas/time it would take for me to get to la jolla would be more than me driving down the street and just buying my salt off craigslist ! if i do move closer though, that would be a much better option
