vanuatu akindynos?

Ron Popeil

Love them clownfish.
i picked up a pair of what at first struck me as white tailed chrysopterus. but then once they were home and settled, the colors struck me as....different from what ive seen. the body isnt as dark as that of any chrysopterus ive seen, especially on the male. its that sort of creamy brown that ive only seen in akindynos. but the bars are thinner than what id expect for ankindynos...right?

they were shipped to my store as a colony (male female pair and the heteractis malu anemone they were allegedly found in) as vanuatu blue stripes.

could they be akindynos? or...chrysopterus? or could they be a mixed pair?

have a look:

the pictures show the female as pretty dark and typical of chysopterus coloration, but its a bit lighter brown than this. the males picture is fairly representative, hes still a lot lighter brown....

Chrys to me as well. If you have ever seen Chrys that come from Tahiti or the surrounding areas, they have a very dull brown body color and 2 thin blue stripes.

I tend to agree, but I sure would like to see a close shot of the male.

There are two things I am looking for and a very close shot of the eyes, and a shot of him head on with the top of the head bar showing.

I know, not asking for much... ;)

because of my inability to operate the camera beyond just point and click, these pictures arent as good as i had hoped. and i dont anticipate them getting any better just yet. so here are two that may or may not help with what youre looking for john.

the pictures dont show it, but the head bar is pinched in the middle.

.....what specific physical traits are you looking for that i might be able to describe if i see them?

Boy he sure does look a lot like an akin. My money would be on a mixed pairing even though everything else says chrys.

The face and eyes on the akin are pretty distinct to me and the head bar too. He just looks like an akin to me.

If you get the chance look closely at his eye and see if there are any light colored artifects on them.

john, i dont see any flecks in the eyes, but are they similar to what im seeing in coraldudes akins? is it flash related, or is the stuff going on in the eyes of his fish what one would expect to see in my own?

a mixed pair sounds fascinating. especially between these two species. thanks for all the help.

My pair of akin's have "tear drops" in their eyes. I haven't seen that in any other species (and only one other akin pair), and thought that might be a dead give away, but alais it is not there.

My male and female has a light more or less body colored "spot" in the shape of a tear drop on both eyes.

While I have not seen every akin. All the ones I have seen have a defined peach/flesh colored nose and a unique carmel color to their body. I don't see either of those traits in the smaller fish.
I vote Chrysopterus.

I vote chrysopterus. I've seen quite a few that look like that come in and from area's not close to akyndinos territory.
