Velvet like covering on zoos

Im getting a maroon velvet-like covering on my zoos. Not killing them, just making them unhappy and inhibiting growth. Seems similar to cyano, but I dont have an outbreak in the tank. I brushed some of them with a soft toothbrush tonight and it comes right off. Any thoughts on to get rid of it? Test showing zero phosphates and minimal nitrates. Thanks

+1^^ increase the flow abit and this will help out.

are they completely closed up right now and covered with this film?
how long has this been going on for?
what are your tank parameters?
some more info on your tank? lights? flow?

Not completely closed, but when babies grow, they usually become covered and stay shut. I have been brushing them lightly with a toothbrush to remove. Tank is a 65 with 2 koralia 3 for flow. 6 bulb tek T5 5ATI 1 UV Actinic. Just tested params -

Nitrate 0
Phos 0
Ph 8.4
Calc 500
Alk 8

I know calcium is high, but I dont think that would cause this.

The tooth brush is taking off their protective coating and they turn reddish brown.you dont want to mess with a sick coral leave it alone completly unless taking it out of the tank for good or cutting out the dead part and the way you know it s time to do that is when ped slime forms over a polyp or you can see it melting or just falling apart so to speak.ive had them turn hard but if they are simply closed with film and or white stuff covering the tips put it in a lowflow low light position and let it heal for a few weeks amnd keep your eyes open but for gods sake it has no teeth so no toothbrush!

the calcium will not effect the zoas so no worry there. your PH is abit high so my next question would be this. what is your magnesium set at? how often do you test your tank and have you noticed any PH swings?

some zoas will just do this for no reason, but normally there is a reason. using a tooth brush is not the best idea, but i have used a baby brush in the past and i know of alot of others who have used a tooth brush. but again it is not a great idea to scrub them with a tooth brush anymore.

have you dipped them in anything? i use revive and it has helped me keep some frags hat i for sure thought were gonners.
