Velvet

Does Velvet affect eels?

I left my tank fallow more than 2 months..and velvet was still there :(

Are you positive that it's velvet? Did your eel suddenly die and show the velvet symptoms? velvet looks a lot like brookynella so just make sure you identify the correct disease.

I don't know for sure; but I can't see why it wouldn't. Eels don't differ in any physiological way from other fish; like sharks & rays do. Eels are just a group of fish without all the fins.

I think you ment phsychological-because moray eels have a number of physiological diffrences! Many that relate to their ability to avoid parasites. They can harbor a few-but seldom will succumb- or even show irritation from them. But keeping a tank fallow means no fish or eels for that matter.

Ya, the tank was almost totally empty except for a few mini maxi and snails. But not sure why it came back after leaving it fallow without light for that long.

just to make sure, you did not introduce anything new to the DT during the 2-month fallow period right? and did you actually successfully treat all your fish for velvet in the QT?

Yeah; I know they are fairly immune, but not completely. I'm not an eel person and should just shut-up when they are the subject. But the main idea was fallow= no fish, including eels. Just one live parasite is all it takes to start an epidemic.

syrinx IS an eel person. The one I send people to with questions about eels.

Thanks! Good to know; that was my guess, based on the great reply. I did a little research before my "physiological " comment, but I don't think I interpreted the info correctly. Reading & learning is getting harder at age 63. I'm trying to help my Son with a FAA test now and its killing me. But, I always learn something on this forum. I think the bottom line is that anything wet can carry, transfer, and harbor parasites; even if they aren't seriously bothered by them.
