Venustus Angel

Moved On
A LFS has one of these guys for sale and I can get it for about $70. I've looked online and never see them below $130 and there never in. So good deal then huh? I am considering getting it for my 120g. Anyone have one in a reef? Does it pick at any corals? Do they need cooler water? Are the hard to get to eat? Any details would be greatly appreciated before I go pick it up, thanks!

I think I am going to pass on it, I just thought it was a good deal. I going to wait to get a female bellus like I originally planned. Thanks.

I think its a great deal at that price. These angels do not get real big so I think it would be perfect for your tank.

Like AD said, tell the lfs to feed it in front of you or put a deposit down and wait a couple more weeks and see how he does.

They are beautiful. :)

From what I have seen, they can nip at corals but rarely cause any damage.

They do carry a warning though of not being real easy to keep in captivity, so you must be sure it is eating before you invest. :)

All true there, and I wanted to add it was the hardest time I've ever had attempting to ween a fish over to prepared foods...and it never did :(. He picked at the rocks like a mad fool, and obviously had some gerth to him, but eventually ate himslef out of house and home. He did pick at corals, but only here and there on SPS, nothing devastating.

However I do know people that have success with them - someone locally to me has a pair that eats mysis and Spectrum pellets!

I've had better luck getting multifaciatus to eat, but they're about the same regarding that aspect.

Yeah, I really don't want to deal with weening a fish onto frozen foods. I don't think my LFS will actually let me keep it there for a few weeks. They are a rather big store and want to just move fish out. They're actually a sponser here, (that pet place). I think I will just wait until I find a could genicanthus angel.

venustus

venustus

Great fish and the key is again a healthy specimen.

Its not my first BBQ and have tried Venustus in the past with some succes. This current specimen fights off tangs for his food eats absolutely everything it took some patience and time but well worth it IMHO.

That is a gorgeous fish! But I am afraid it will eat some of my LPS and zoos.
I have TONS of LPS, and they never phased him, he never even looked their way...I dont keep zoas, but IMO these aren't the kind of angels that would go for them (still angels though ;) ).

gasman059s' venustus is just gorgeous! I'd love to find one in great health someday....they're mostly a special order around here though which makes it even more hit or miss.

The going price is about $120. Bluezoo has it currently 50% off for the final price of $69.99 and was going to order 2 but only showing one in stock.

I've one in my 180g since May but haven't seen it eat any prepared food other than grazing LRs but has grown since and not skinny at all. It took my Colini 5.5 weeks to eat and the 8" Blue Line angel 7.5 weeks to nip on freeze dried mysis and flakes. As long as you get a healthy specimen I think you will have a very good chance on getting it to eat.

It is pretty hard to get it to eat... My had very good success with my current one... It is eating Mysis and Spectrum Pellets now.. Perhaps it is due to my multifaciatus which is eating too that is entice it to eat too...

Gasman,
That is a superb (para)Centropyge there! Love the color. If I could find one that was eating for 70$ I'd be kicking my C. argi out of my tank! LOL

Very nice Terry... there is a chance these fish will eventually pair... twenty years ago a hybrid of these two species went to Japan, and a second specimen just showed up two months ago... a beautiful hybrid... I've had my multifasciata almost four years now and it is HUGE! I recently got a small one fom the Marshalls and hope to make a pair...

I've decided on a female bellus angel instead. Getting one at my LFS this weekend for about $90. I really don't want to take a chance in having an angel eat any of my corals, that is what my FO is for!

I kept a P. venustus about 12-14 years ago in a fish only system with no live rock. It adapted well and ate everything including flake food. I suspect the hardiness of this fish is directly related to capture and handling. If you get a good specimen that has been handled properly, they are very keepable and no more difficult than any other dwarf angel. Have your LFS feed the fish first.

I am planning to pair them up... No sign of aggression towards each other... will let nature takes it course... haha... I saw the hybrid... Really a beauty..
