verifying digital thermometers

This is not for those of you who already have the controllers!

ok, i have been lazy on the cleaning side. My digital thermometer has been readin g 66-67^ for quite some time. but i also have the old glass thermometer that i have been trusting. it is in the green zone! (not very easy to get exact temp)

I soaked the digital in vinegar last night, stuck it in the quarantine tank this morning and it says 92^, the glass thermometer says little over 82 - i adjusted the heater a little!

How do you know your digital thermometer is reading correctly?

I have a very good dial (bimetal) thermometer that I can calibrate at 32F and 212F. Then I use that to make sure my digitals are matching it.

Not as good as Randy's method, but I use on the the Coralife digital thermometers as a secondary back up. I believe they are only $10 or so but it should let me know if the temp on my controller is getting out of wack on a larger scale.

I have a gun that you point at the tank and it reads the temp. If I'm down that way anytime soon I can swing by with it and check the temp for you. Otherwise, a cooking thermometer..the kind that looks like a stick with the thermometer on top (help me out with the name here someone?) is pretty inexpensive in the food store and works great.

i never thought of that! i have one of those guns that i use on the cars! and i know the cooking temp probe you are talking about too! never though of using the gun!

and in case i didn't mention it - THANK YOU for lending me the can! it was 44g right? trying to keep track of how much water is in there.

Those guns are great tools for temps. I use mine all the time. Yes, the Brute was 44 gallons. No problem at all...glad I could help. Marcye
