Vertex Illumina Club

I am thinking seriously of ordering the 24" 260, but have a canopy where the lights sit 16" off the water. I'm unsure how I'd mount these in the canopy...?

I recently got the 24" illumina for my 36" 30 gallon tank. I'm considering upgrading to a 75 or 90 gallon tank that is 48" long. Do you think I'd still be able to use the 24" Illumina adequately over this new tank?

I have a 24" Illumina over a 75g tank in my office right now at 4" above the surface, the light covers the entire tank, although not completely ideal down to far edges.

A 48" 75 gallon? Thats the best news I've heard all day :-)

Jamie,

The V-Stick software doesn't appear to work with the new Mac OS 10.7 Lion. Have you heard anything about when we can expect an upgrade?

Ok, I think I'm going to go with a 36"x24"x24" tank for my upgrade (about 90 gallons). I think my SR200 24" should work well on that correct?

Thanks,
Eric

BS. No way that 24" fixture covers a 48" tank 4" above the surface, unless your definition of "although not completely ideal down to far edges." means a lot of area on each side.

You would have to raise that fixture much higher than 4" to cover the whole tank AND in addition to that, go take PAR readings at the center and ends and and you will see the drop off.

I call your BS :) here's a 12" fixture, over a 30" tank, five inches off the water...

my aquascape is sorta based on golden ratio and Japanese style reefs, so the lights effect is exactly what I wanted/planned.

I think by 'less than completely ideal' would mean, if you wanted an all SPS system you would want to go with a longer fixture since you will have less intensity around the edges to successfully grow SPS...

Now, if you are going for a more mixed reef type aquascape, go with the smaller fixture and put less light loving stuff around the edges.

I agree somewhat that there will be drop off at the edges. You can see it in the front left of the above photo. My opinion is that a 30" tank with a 12" fixture is on the edge of having to go up to the next size as is the 48" tank with a 24" fixture on it. I don't think you could do a 36" tank with a 12" fixture. Another thing to consider is that 16 high power LEDs are crammed together without optics so it minics a MH bulb. You could easily light a 75 with two MH bulbs. Also, maybe someone could chime in, are not the modules movable? So if I bought a 12" for my 24x24x24" cube I could move the two modules a couple of inches out to the egdes to get more coverage? I bet with the 24" over the 48" if you moved the two outside modules as far out to the edge of the fixture as possible and the two center ones out a little because of the top support divider you would get total coverage.

Wow....great thread and great info being shared.

I have a 180gl sps tank run with MH. I am now in the process of setting up a custom starphire 60gl Cube in my billiards/game room.

I am planning on going LED for many reasons. After much research here on RC and talking locally with others; I have it narrowed down to AI and Vertex. If I go Vertex Illumina will the 12" be enough cover? I know this may be a bais question here on the Vertex thread, but is Vertex Illumina series that much better then an AI setup?

Any help, insight and suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.........

I'm not saying that there was going to be NO light. I am saying that the intensity drop off would be dramatic. If you do not think so, get a PAR meter and check for yourself.

But creative aquascaping solves that problem. You are not going to place corals in every single square-inch of the tank, you are just trying to create a harmonious and balanced place for both fish and coral.

I agree. I was just disputing the claim. I have the same issue in my tank.
