Vertex Skimmer club

I just picked up the IN-100 yesterday and have the same noise goes from a less annoying hum to an abrasive prolonged hum. I took the pump apart and it had some silicone in the intake... cleaned it out, now its just an inbetween annoying hum/buzz that stays constant. Its loud...

In100

I have had the IN-100 for 5 months. The motor "will" eventually quieten down after it has run for 3 - 4 days. Check for vibrations if your unit is up against the acrylic side of the sump or possibly the exhaust is touching a heater or something it could be vibrating against.

I took the motor out at the 5 month interval and completely cleaned it. The venturi will often times get clogged up. You will notice this as the exhaust will be FULL of micro bubbles. After I cleaned the motor and re-assembled the unit, the motor was LOUD for about 3 hours. It then finally quietened down.

Good Luck. This is an excellent skimmer BTW.

Just wanted to be sure before I join the club a n100 will be plenty for a 75g mixed reef I am deciding between this and a oct 150 Why is the n100 only rated at 100g and the oct 150 rated at 150 when they both have a 6" body.

ratings are made up by the company, and many are misleading. I think you'll be fine with the IN-100 for your 75 gallon.

Well the pump doesnt seem to be getting better... Is there another pump that has been used on this skimmer with success?

I have had the IN80 running on my 75g lightly stocked reef for a few weeks. This thing is skimming like a champ! Dark stinky nog. I really like the skimmer, a true set and forget skimmer. Once dailed in, very consistent. This thing is skimming better than my MRC MR1.

Very happy! 

Okay just got my IN-250. Set it up yesterday in a separate tub to break in before putting it in my sump. I know it says to put it in 6"-8" of water, but what is everyones experience with this? It's been running since yesterday after noon, and the bubbles haven't started going up the column. I do have it all the way open, so probably have to close it some. How long does it take to break in? I have to say so far this thing is silent. When i first turned the pump on, i expected to hear it making some noise, but nothing. So far a great skimmer, can't wait to see this thing in action on my tanks. I have a 40G breeder and a 75G plumed togeather on a 40G breeder sump. For a total of about 150G of water, and plan on adding a frag tank to this setup later.

It will take about 2 weeks to break in, just let it run. It won't start making skimmate until after a few days. Don't close the wedge pipe too early, might cause it to overflow.

I run my IN80 in about 8.5" of water, works great. Any higher than around 8" will force the skimmer to work to hard and add too much pressure in the body. The vertex skimmers are great right out of the box.

I run my IN-80 in about 11" of water and it skims fine. I was running the air vent wide open to keep the bubble level correct, but that was also with the exit pipe attached and under water. Once I removed the exit pipe and ran with just the elbow under water, it removed that backpressure and I had to adjust the bubble height by closing off the air vent about 3/4 of the way.

Bottom line, IME it can be run in 11" of water.

The motor on the other hand is a HUGE issue. It is loud. Very loud. Especially when you compare it to other high end skimmers (where you're paying for a $200 motor).

I am currently looking at replacing the motor with a bubble blaster...

I've seen other recommendations in this thread for the Octopus Bubble Blaster 2000 or 3000 (hy-2000 hy-3000) which are around $200. I haven't seen any posts though of anyone who has actually used either of these on an IN-80 though, and that's what I'm considering. Would love to hear from someone before I drop $200...

So after some more digging around I think I am going with a different pump. Yesterday I ran across the Tunze Hydrofoamer 9410.040 on a skimmer and I could not believe it. It was absolutely SILENT. Right now my stock vortex pump is about as noisy as a vacuum cleaner, so replacing is a must. Looking at the Tunze compared with the BB, it seems that the Tunze with the vertical outlet will be an easier adaptation to the IN-80.

Should be ordering one this week and will post up the results.

Has ony one tried a mag drive or rio on an in-80? This is the second pump that has failed on me. Or any other pump that dosent cost more than the skimmer?

Which sicce did you use, do you have a pic of the mod. time for me to change out my pump as well.

sorry I don't get one here much. its not much of a mod the pump just plugged into the body just like the original one did. and its a sicce pump off a swc skimmer

PM me in 2 weeks. Once I have my Tunze pump and know it's working I'll gladly sell you my stock pump (if you want it)
