Okay guys, I need some help here.

I'm currently building a 400 gallon Leemar tank. I listed all my livestock out of my 120 and I had people come to my home last night to buy fish.

My 120 has been up and running for 8 years and nearly every fish in there has been in my tank the entire time. I feed my tank 3-5 times per day, so my fish are nice and fat and very well colored.

About an hour before people were coming over, I pulled out about 100lbs of live rock and put them in a container with water and air. LOTS of detritus was stirred up.

I pulled the fish out and into a 5 gallon bucket (6 anthias, 2 bangai, potters). The bucket was about half full. The fish were swimming around fine in the bucket. As people showed up, I put the fish and water into bags. Most people traveled less than 20 minutes away. 1 gentleman got home and all his fish were dead. I was just contacted by someone else today and his fish died as well.

These fish have been in my tank forever. I feel so incredibly guilty today. My first thought was that the detritus caused a spike and killed those fish. I wouldn't think a spike would effect fish that quickly. But the fiish in the aquarium are still alive. My other thought was that the fish were breathing hard and consumed a lot of oxygen in the water and suffocated by the time they got to their new homes.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. I consider myself an advanced hobbyist and have been doing this for 12 years, but this one stumped me.

some fish are tougher than others. the other fish endured more stress by being transported and put into new tanks, etc.

Were you N and P high? It can really shock a fish to go from a high N and P tank to a tank with low levels.

The fishes likely died of poisoning. Once they were bagged, there was even less oxygen for the fishes, and their gills were likely already burned from the spikes, esp. if there was an ammonia spike.

Then, if the peeps dripped their fishes in the same water, the pH probably rose, which made caused the less toxic NH4+ to become NH3, which is very toxic.

Stirring up substrate is bad juju.
