Very Confusing Anemone!

I cannot figure out this BTA ... During the night and morning it is absolutely gorgeous (its in a 12 g. nano) then when i come home it looks on the brink of death i have had it for one week now... The first problem i had was a rock slipping and it getting a laceration in its side which doesnt seem to be a problem :/ Its got huge bubble tentacles when its inflated but its mouth is not super tight and then on the other hand it goes to the brink of death it totally deflates there is nothing inflated in the tentacles or trunk and its mouth is a good inch wide!! .... My temp is at 80.4 which i am hesitant to change because of the temper mental thermometer and i have check my nitrates they are below 5 ppm my ammonia is 0 I do almost 50% water changes every week. and my ph is around 8.0 to 8.3 i think i might be a little colorblind i cant seem to see it very well. I dont know if this was the right thing to do but it wasnt grabbing any food so i took a syringe and just shot it right at is mouth and some of the food got in the mouth closed up and ate it?? What do you think is going on?

well first off, how big is the anemone? a 12 gal IMO is too small for a nem...you may have water issues with excess waste. Exactly where is the laceration, the foot, tenticles, or oral disc? Mine would deflate on a daily basis but this was just to 'change its water', the gaping mouth is a concern. Also, DON"T blow a syringe straight into the mouth! its only damaging the nem, I don't beleive in 'force' feeding anemones, if they are not happy, they won't eat.

A pic would be helpful...

an anemone with a tear will more than likely die, its usually fatal. sorry to be the messenger, but you are about to have a very sick tank if it dies in there. they screw up the water really bad when they die. :(

It's not entirely true with BTA's, you can cut these guys in half and they will survive. BUt I do agree with getting it out of there ASAP if it does die, especially with your water volume.

I will start out by agreeing that a 12 is too small for an anemone long term, usually the lighting in anadequate. Do you have stock or upgraded lights? A laceration can be the kiss of death for a bta. I also would never squirt anything into it's mouth, very dangerous using a syringe, it's easy to exert too much pressure. What I do if is place the food very close to its mouth and never force feed. It sounds like you are keeping up the water quality one of the things essential for it to heal. Good lighting and moderate flow are also essential especially when damaged.

And then you can see the mouth now is really tight :/ i can't figure it out

Sorry umm i believe the are compact flourescents ... But when you think about lighting it is only about maybe 8 inches from the surface and it hasnt moved from that spot even when it was brink of death so that is a somewhat good sign right?

Insufficiant lighting kills an anemone over an extended period of time, firstly it will start bleaching. What exactly is the output of the PC's? If you have the JBJ 12, the stock is either 1x24W or the DX has 2x24W, either way, not enough lighting for the nem to thrive.

When i rearranged my rockwork some months ago my nem had attaced to 2 pieces of rock...
The one rock slided and it teared the foot in half... Totally...
Took about a week to heal and the nem looks better than ever before...
It now has a split foot :p
IT´s a bta

I think it is the DX ... I will prolly upgrade the lighting in the tank in april that's my birthday lol ... I have read that anemones can get an infection what are your thoughts on that ?

I have several in my 14 biocube. They are the size of ping pong balls. I have t5s and I have been doing 2 water changes a week to keep up the water quality. It is only temporary, they are headed for my 50 w/MH. My biggest concerns are your lighting and that maroon. I am familiar with maroons hosting and it can be very rough. If it gets too rough (especially since it's injured) it could kill it. From the photo it is hard to tell if it is a rose or green bta, I'd say it was bleaching. I would seperate it form the maroon at least to give it time to heal. I know this is may be diffiuclt but that's what I'd do. Continue feeding, soaking the food in selcon or zoe would be a good idea too.

Also the tentacles look very short and sparse, which im sorry to say is not a good sign. How long has the tank been setup?

Keep a very close eye on it...

We use VHO's in our 90 gallon tank and that BTA (the haitian when through a powerhead) is doing incredibly well and there is a daylight and an actinic in that so the light i am a little skeptical about being the issue at the moment

Umm i started my own account seperate from the one my dad and i were using for the 90 when i got this tank so for a year

Yeah i do try to separate the clown when the anemone is a little stressed but right now i think it is helping it its guarding it from the pistol and watchman and is being very gingerly with it...Its a GBTA and it honestly has not changed color from when i got it from the store at all :/ My camera is ANCIENT so i would not trust the color.

I believe at this time though there are no known treatment for and injured anemone. Unfortunately either it will heal or it will die.
The only thing you can do is provide it the best possible conditions for it to heal. Keep your tank as pristine as possible offer it bright light (your tank lacks) moderate flow for respiration, without good current it can attract mucus feeding bacteria.

alright well where can i get an upgrade for the lighting? and if i do one it will be done right so im thinking a 70W MH Viper clip light.... Any thoughts?
