VHO out put question?

Im currently running a 125g mixed reef. My lighting system is 3x250w 14k MHs with 4x72" 160w actinic VHOs...My main source of lighting is obviously the MHs, but how beneficial are VHOs in general? Not looking to upgrade to T5 cause its not needed with the 3 MHs, so im using the VHOs for actinics purposes only. But with running 640 watts, I would imagine it has to give off enough light for coral? What got me thinking was when my MH turned off for the nite and the actinics were on, started thinking if they can still get enough light from the VHOs to grow, atleast alittle...

Growth of all other parameters are normal sps need at least 3 to 5 watts per gallon assuming

False. Please research this topic further by using the search button. Watts per gallon is an old theory that is totally outdated and should NOT be used. We are worried about PAR these days because it is a much better measurement. I dare you to stick 5 watts per gallon of LEDs over your tank and see what happens.

Don't let him try to kill corals and burn the eyes of the fish with that much light. (I agree and understand what your saying)

I'm not worried about par or watts per gallon cuz my 3 halides take care of all that. I'm simply asking if my corals are getting anything beneficial from the VHOs..I know vho lights do not penetrate that deep, but I have a standard 125g tank. again simply wondering if my corals are getting anything from my 4 vho actinics...

Yes they are. Corals will use the light to their benefit.

while actinics are not needed, they are certainly not a waste. the corals do use the light, and some claim they do also enhance the color of the coral, not just the obvious actinic pop, but can help turn the coral from one shade to another.

rtparty: What are your thoughts then on using LEDs as a primary source for lighting.. maybe you can add to this post:
