im building a 120 and im using two 250 with most likely 14k. im wanting to use two vho bulbs along with the mh. any recomendations on what kind of vho to use?

super antinics probably what you want...although if you go with like a 14k bulb... like a phoenix, probably dont need supplimental, or are you looking for brand?

If you are adding the VHO to get some additional blue and make your colors pop, I would try one super actinic (03) and one 454. 454 in front 03 behind it.

well i havent thought about brands for the mh or the vho, yeah i was looking into the vho for extra pop. i have never had a mh setup before so im still learning about the different bulbs. thanks for the info so far, there a good place to but the 03 and 454 bulb?

Check the prices your LFS can get them for first and then see about some of the sponsors on here. Depending on the length of bulb you need it sometimes cost a bunch more due to oversize shipping charges on 46.5" to 6 ft bulbs

I'd go with two super Actinics. Have two and a 20K MH and love the look. Corals pop so much more than with just one super Actinic.

Everyone who uses MH+VHO uses Super Actinic R, and it does look great, PAR is low but the blue is the best actinic effect I´ve seen.

There is not such thing as "best", just preference. If you have space, i would recommend running SE (mogul) bulbs in Lumenbright reflectors and Coralvue ballasts. Great brand IME and moguls are easier to work with then HQI's (DE). Hope that helps, Wiz ;)

IMO your going to be limited by your tank.

Fish's advice is good however good lumenbrights or lumenmax, or lumenarcs are all in the 19-24 inch range in size. If your tank is a normal 4 foot 90 its only 18 inches wide so I think your sol with it.

I would look for a decent HQI system with reflectors. I had 2 T-5s with 2 250HQI retro on my old 90 and it was very very bright.

All caps is tough to read and means you're yelling.

As for the lights, I think you should do a lot of reading as there are many choices that will suit you well.

I've never ran anything but mogul based bulbs, so I know nothing about de bulbs. However, I started with some generic 10K bulb, then ran xm 20k bulbs, and have now moved on to Radium bulbs. I don't ever plan on using anything but the radium bulbs from here on. I'm currently supplementing with t-5's, but once they are worn out I think I'll change to vho super actinics. Basically, read all you can, look at pictures, and even better find locals that will let you come look at their tank and see what looks good to you. Then buy whatever it is that you think looks good.

The 454's are a true blue, the super actinic 03's are more of a violet. The 454 have quite a bit more par (brighter). I have bought from BRS, Drs F&S and my lfs.

super actinic R are not violet, they are 100% blue. As to the 454 they seem interesting, I gotta try them too!

Fosters and smith list them as:

Unique 85% tri-band blue spectrum and 15% actinic spectrum blend boosts aquarium coral fluorescence and photosynthesis.
# Mixes 85% 460nm 15% 03
# Ultra blue appearance

I still like the 100% actinic for the fluorescence at night and the extra pop with supplement

thank you everyone for your info, so the the super actinic R is lower on the par. so im wanting to keep more of a sps dominated tank would the 454 combo w/ the actinic 03 be better?
