Video of Cuba's Coral Reef Virtually Untouched!

This is an amazing video, thank you for sharing. While I don't think this is the place for political discussion, I will go so far as to say this reef is largely protected by the inability of the tourists as well as the island natives to get to it. Although being the daughter of a long line of fisherman there, who was fortunate enough to be raised here, I can say the Cuban people on the island have a deep respect for the sea and it's creatures, and they (all be it by necessity) are not a wasteful people. I like to think my family has passed that on to me and try not to buy as much as I trade and grow in this hobby. It's a lifelong wish to one day dive those same reefs. I do hope they are doing something about the Lionfish, I was surprised to see them there. I'd love to see the rest of this report!

There are still plenty of tourists there from all over the world, just not from the US. The show we watched they showed some of the beaches that were absolutely crowded with locals and tourists and the reefs there weren't doing well, where the protected reefs are flourishing.

Absolutely, reefs like this one are very difficult to get to even if not protected, hence they're flourishing.

There are only certain areas that are "tourist spots" like Varadero, nut people are definitely traveling, and this documentary must be older because the flights in and out are open, and packed.

Ban destructive fishing methods like spearfishing, fishing with dynamite, poison or gillnets near the reef, restrict trawling to offshore areas, ban collection of shells & corals for souvenirs, ban gravel and rock extraction for construction, regulate the development of adjacent coastal areas, regulate mooring points for ships, allow the EPA to regulate sewage, industrial pollution and oil extraction, and there's no reason why other areas can't have healthy reefs too.

Of course, the US is currently going in the exact opposite direction, with deregulations and call for the abolishing of the EPA, and when communism falls and Cubas economy can start to move out of the 70's, their reefs too will be destroyed.

Yes that looks beautiful...but at WHAT PRICE? Killing THOUSANDS of HUMANS who simply want to express their opinion? For almost 50 yrs a COMMUNIST DICTATOR has been 90 miles from OUR land. I do agree those reefs look great, very healthy and thriving....but please ask THIS question: Are the CUBAN people THRIVING? HEALTHY?

lol OMG

SERIOUSLY?
What Caribbean are you speaking about?
BETTER EDUCATED?
Have you seen cubans crossing the straits nowadays? Educated they ARE NOT

HEALTHIER?
Sure no McDonalds, No BK, I give you that one

And NOT POOR?
COME ON MAN.
Average Cuban salary is about 200 pesos a month...Give and take 20 US dollars a month. Try living on .75 cents a day!!!!!
COME ONE MAN.
One thing is to speak about coral reefs and their protection, but please EDUCATE yourself on the CUBAN REALITY before you speak about everything else
one out of every 10 has a university degree, these are the nicest people and satisfied people you will ever meet. if you are ever lucky enough and get a chance to visit, dont pass it up

I dont wanna get into politics here , so Im just going to say that I was born and lived in Cuba for 18 years , I've seen the good and the bad ,and one has to live there to actually know how life is in that country.

That reef like many others is just one of the many natural wonders Cuba has to offer to marine enthusiasts like ourselves, and if any of you guys are divers should definitely check it out.

Hey guys it's about Cuba's Reef Okay !!!!!!

Hey guys it's about Cuba's Reef Okay !!!!!!

Hey everybody I posted this video to show Cuba's pristine reef, not to post about politics or take shots at the people who live there. Let the post's be about Cuba's reef, otherwise this post will be lock up or removed, and nobody else will be able to enjoy this video about what we all love REEF'S.

Thanks, Greg

One can protect reefs without repressive regimes.

As for the Cuban people, relative to the average of other Caribbean nations they are better educated, healthier, and not poor. Thriving? That term is not precise, and therefore subject to the biases of the questioner. (e.g. they are not "thriving" in terms of political freedom, certainly, nor are they "thriving" economically, largely due to being locked out of the major market in this region (us), but in terms of education and access to affordable health care, yes, they are thriving relative to the average of other Caribbean nations.)

Affordable health care??? When my cousin had her baby she had to bring her own meds to the hospital and fan because there wasn't any AC. When my grandfather got diagnosed with diabetes he was happy because the "government" gave him an extra pound of meat per month. Yes it's rationed... So i don't see how they are thriving.

Aside from that it was a great video thanks for sharing it with us...

Sorry CaptiveReef, But that comment that atreis made would be equivalent of me posting that i have 5 Yellow tangs in a 20 gal tank. lol

But it was a great video thanks again.

Makes me think of the statement "we are killing our planet".

You know that's a term big business likes us to use IMO. As it appears impossible really. The fact of the matter is we can never kill this planet.

I'd like to hear people refer to the pollution and destruction our civilization brings to the planet as "we are killing ourselves". That's what we are doing, killing ourselves, not the planet, in the end she'll just shake us off like a bad cold.
