Viewpoints – A Photographic Journal of my Reef Tank

I followed along on NR and your Jbj 28. That was an amazing looking tank.

This surpasses that infinitely. Your attention to detail on all aspects of the build is amazing. I wish I could get my cords and equipment to look so neat. But I fail bad when
it comes to that. Your explanations and step by step information from the start are top notch. I cant wait to see what becomes of this tank. I see there hasnt been an update in quite some time. I hope all is ok with you and you are just giving things time to grow before updating again. I know I and many others are looking forward to the updates. Cant wait to see some of the photographs from this tank. The ones from the NC 28 were amazing. I need to learn how to use my camera better.

Extremely clean build out, I wish I had the time to make mine look that clean, but with a 5 y/o and a 16 m/o I barely have time to feed and maintain!

However, your look is my goal for my "ultimate build" some day, albiet on a bigger 400 gal scale. One can dream....and I'll certainly use your thread for inspiration and design. Simply perfect, gorgeous, and elegant!

Subscribed and looking forward to the next update. I hope all is OK!

Awesome Brad ... now I know why you are providing very few updates to your Nano tank.

Did you basically break it down and move everything to the new tank? Is the new tank in the same space as the old?

CoopMD - The new tank is in the same room but across from where the nano use to sit. The nano has been broken down and moved to a friends/co-workers house. You will recognize several of the corals from the nano in the new tank.

Awesome thread! Thanks for the great pictures!

elmitz - Thanks for your comments.

I love your setup, a lot of great ideas! I hope you don't mind I am going to probably be asking some questions if they havent already been answered when I start my rimless build thank you for sharing this wonderful tank with everyone!:bounce1:

dantdodge - Thanks for your kind words, glad that some of the ideas I've included are considered "good". I look forward to hearing from you with questions. Just shoot me a PM.

Been awhile since you updated man...whats goin on?

chrishayes - There has been a lack of updates but there has not been a lack of effort being put into the tank. I've been focusing on my maintenance and water quality. I just took a bunch of pictures today, so I will be making an update shortly.

Urbaneks - how about an October update on your awesome tank?

skh - Update to follow

CJ03 - I'm glad to know that someone from Nanoreef has found me here on RC. I was just looking at my old Nanoreef thread the other day and I do miss that tank but I can't justify the extra maintenance on a 2nd tank.

zmalexander - I understand having children and the time it takes, I have 2 myself. My advice to you is to take the time now to clean up your setup and it will save you time in the future. Can't wait to see your 400g on here one day.

I am only on page 2!!!! I like the journal.. How is the rolling sump and ato resivor working?

scubaman2 - Glad you are liking the journal. The ATO reservoir is nice but too small. I have to refill it about every 4th day. I wish it were larger but don't really have room under the stand for anything larger. The rolling sump shelf is great when I do my semi-annual maintenance which includes a full clean of the sump.

Very detailed. Tank you for all the tips

jbliss - Glad the detail is helpful.

I would love to see some more pictures. Hope your tanks doing good.

Crypsis - More pictures are on the way. Tank is doing just fine.

Just read the entire thread and I must say amazing! Can't wait for more updates.

tcoker79 - Thanks for the kind words.

This tank still going? It's been over 5-mo since the last update :(

ange062 - The tank is still going. I have definitely slacked on my journal but will be putting an update together today.

January 2012 Full Tank Shot

It's been too long since my last update which I do regret. While I have not been putting the effort into my journal, I've been putting plenty of effort into the tank. Over the past 5 months, I've been trying to refine my maintenance, feeding and dosing to optimize water quality and color. Over that time period, I've struggled to get my phosphates to zero and had a pretty long battle with green hair algae. My phosphates typically read .03 to .07 on the Hana Meter but always read zero with a Salifert Kit. I've settled in on the use of Phos Lock in a media reactor and replace it approximately every 3 weeks. I also do a 12g water change every two weeks. Even with this regiment, I still can't get the phosphates to read 0 on the Hana Meter but have the green hair algae about knocked out.

Tort.jpg
Cali Tort - One of my best growing corals, beautiful blues and greens in this coral

Now that I am on the other side of my battle with the green hair algae, I'm convinced that my phosphates being at .03-.07 was not the cause. Rather than the phosphates, I believe that dosing some of the Zeovit supplements according to the directions is what caused the algae. Specifically, I used Coral Vitalizer and Pohl's Extra which I believe caused the bloom. With that said, I really like these products as the PE and color is noticeably different when I dose them. I've concluded that these supplements need to be used in 1/4 of the recommended dose if you are not using the full Zeovit system. I'm on week 3 of dosing 1/4th the recommended dose and I'm getting good color and more importantly no algae.

RedTable.jpg
Red Tabling Acro - One of my favorites - This one is starting to really color up and put on new growth

While my plans for the tank continues to be mostly SPS, I did recently add a Torch Coral for some extra movement in the tank. I'm very pleased with what the Torch has added to the center of the tank. I also have plans to add a few Acan Colonies to the right side of the tank. As far as SPS goes, I continue to add pieces when I see something that I can't live without. I've taken my coral additions slow to allow for growth which I have to admit is even slower than I expected when first moving to a SPS dominated tank.

Torch.jpg
This Torch Coral has added some extra color, movement and pop to the center of the tank.

This looks superb! Love the clean look of the tank and the scaping. The torch looks amazing and I bet adds a much needed dynamic otherwise missing from most SPS only tanks. Look forward to seeing this mature.

Aqua Scaping - For the most part my aqua scape is unchanged from when my tank was first setup. I have made some minor tweaks to a couple of the rocks which were in an effort to open up the tank. My first scape created a very nice center trench but also made flow and shadows a bit of a problem. Since making the last adjustment, the flow is much better and there are less shadows for the corals positioned low in the trench. It's not perfect by an means but getting closer to the vision I have for the tank. At this point, I'm trying to remain patient and allow the current corals to fill in. Being patient is not always easy but forces me to only buy a coral when I absolutely love it.

I continue to look at the tank from all viewpoints in an effort to create a great scape from all 3 viewable sides of the tank. While many shy away from plating and encrusting montipora, they remain one of my favorite corals. I think they add a color and texture to the tank that helps to offset the acros. I've tried to keep my plating montiporas low on rocks and over the sand bed so they don't create shadows on prime real estate. The photo below shows one of my monti's growing out over the sand bed.

RightSide.jpg

This photo is taken from the right side of the tank looking towards the front. You can actually see the reflection of the tank in the front panel.

ChiliPepper.jpg

This encrusting montipora is a frag from a display tank at my LFS (Reef Culture) in Tempe, AZ. If any of you have been to Reef Culture, you know the colony I'm referring too. I hope this little guy grows up to be half as nice as the mother colony.

Maintenance Schedule - While I wish I could tell you that I have a perfect maintenance schedule, the truth is I don't. I started this tank up with the schedule that I used for my nano, over the past 8 months, I've realized that the demands for this tank/SPS are different and thus require a different approach.

For the last 3 months, I've really been working to refine the maintenance needed to keep the tank clean and balanced while still caring for the fish. At the end of each month, I evaluate the tank and the schedule to see where I need to improve and in some cases reduce maintenance. Just recently, I went from weekly water changes to every other week. Based on my water tests, the tank definitely supports the longer frequency on water changes however, I feel I sacrifice in crystal clear water in the 2nd week.

I estimate that I spend about 3 hours a week in maintenance time. While many in my house wonder why it takes so much time, the truth is I enjoy the maintenance aspect of the tank almost as much as just sitting back and watching the tank. The photo below shows a screen shot of my schedule which is an excel file. If anyone is interested in the file send me a PM and I'd be happy to share it. The excel file has multiple tabs which also tracks dosing, charts water parameters, bulb age, RODI replacments, etc, etc. I feel that documenting your activities is the only way to determine what to improve when things are not going right and continue the things that are working.

Schedule.jpg

This is a screen shot of the maintenance schedule that I follow

Live Stock - My current stocking consists of two Percula Clowns which have been with me for 3+ years now and go back to my Nano Cube. I also have 2 Bartlett's Anthias, 2 Lemark Angels, a Melanarius Wrasse, Blue Tang, Yellow Watchman Goby/Pistol Shrimp Combo and a Red Mandarin Dragonette. While all are great, the Mandarin is my favorite, the secretive nature and continuous hunting makes him a favorite of most that visit the house. I would have to say that the goby and shrimp pair are my next favorite tank mates. It's very easy to burn an hour watching the two of them work together.

Red Mandarin Dragonette - Tank Favorite

StarFish.jpg

This star fish is another favorite for the kids to look for. He also adds some great color to the tank.

Glad to see the update. Long overdo but its impressive nonetheless! I was concerned that you had some bad luck of some kind but knew it wasnt lack of interest. You are a reefer and that means that we are never without a tank whether thats in reality or imagination. Glad its still a reality for you as it helps this community to have you posting. Just cant say enough about your detail whether its small or large, you just seem to nail it down with military precision(I know thats in your background). Hope youll be posting more now that youre back!

Oh and I too am an ex nanoreefer.

The journal just spilled over to a new page so I thought I would add a few more photos that I took the other day. These first two shots show a couple viewpoints of the tank that I've taken a liking to.

The first photo shows the center trench which is the focal point of the tank. Since taking this photo, I've separated the two sides a bit making the trench about 5 inches across.

The second photo shows a view from one of the side panels. You really have to go out of your way to view the tank from this angle but I do really like it. I had a huge colony of brown monti cap that I fragged, you can see a couple of the pieces in this photo. Not the prettiest coral but very natural looking and great for texture. The caps are positioned over the sand bed so that other corals are not shaded.

Trench.jpg

A closer look through the center of the tank, I designed the scape with this trench as the focal point. Still needs some work but the fish do hang out in it.

RightSideBack.jpg

This photo is taken of the back right corner of the tank. I really like the view through this section of the tank. It's kind of a shame that it's in the back and out of view.

PearlBerry.jpg

This coral sat idle for about 4 months, it wasn't until one of the tips broke off that growth was triggered. It's really coloring up nicely. I believe this is an ORA Pearl Berry.

WhiteCap.jpg

This coral is growing quick relative to most of my other pieces. It's getting some very nice purple stalks with white tips and polyps.

BirdsNest.jpg

This coral started out in my nano as a 1" frag. I now have this piece that is about 4" by 4", another piece that is about 8" by 8" and two other pieces that are about 3". I really need to find a home for some of this. I will say that it's one of the best strands of Birds Nest I've seen. Very, very green with an orange stalks.

PokerStar.jpg

This was my first attempt at a top down shot through a view box I made from some acrylic scraps. When I bought this monti, it looked as it does again today but did go through a time where it went brown. Once it decided to color back up, it only took a day or two.

looking good man, really glad to see the update...
Schedule looks really nice, and a good way to actually track the time you spend in case of significant other disagreements.

Are you tracking your parameters as well? just curious as it could be a cool graph that easy to make with the excel spreadsheet you already made.

Love the encrusting monti's you have, i got a frag of the Jason Fox Violet Orange monti (rediculously bright and kinda like mystic sunset but seriously it glows) and thought you might want to take a look at it..not the cheapest but a VERY nice coral ill try to get a pic of mine and pm ya...

otherwise keep the pics coming love your tank....just makes me want to finish my upgrade even more (taking me tooo long)

Man, looking at your tank (and even this thread) one can see the dedication you have towards your tank and this hobby.

Reading through the thread, looking at the coral photos, looking at the placement of the rocks; it all tells me that you took great effort in the whole process of setting this tank up and it shows. Looks amazing.

With time, growth and colouring up of corals I'd be surprised if this didnt turn out to be an amazing bit of a reef.

Since I am in the mood of providing a critique in a way, I hope you dont mind me saying that the only area I would look to improve is the photography slightly - its very good, dont get me wrong, in fact the composition is perfect!

Where I would want to see improvement is perhaps some of the white balance and also to increase the brightness. The two may be related; perhaps up the ISO slightly or use a longer shutter speed if possible. I hope you dont tell me off for the critique - :hammer:

Stunning tank, amazing attention to every detail.

RParker - Many thanks!

This looks superb! Love the clean look of the tank and the scaping. The torch looks amazing and I bet adds a much needed dynamic otherwise missing from most SPS only tanks. Look forward to seeing this mature.

Sahin - Many thanks, I will be more diligent about regular posts.

Yes, beautiful. You really know what you are doing!

iwishtofish - Let's not get carried away, I would say, I'm learning what I'm doing but far from really knowing what I'm doing. I would really like feedback from other reefers on gaps they might see in my routines. Thanks for the view and comments.

i had that light once, great results too i miss it

what gravel you using? looks great

rodneyri - The light is great, although, I'm not sold on my bulb combo and I'm not convinced I have it mounted at the right height above the tank. I just recently moved it from 9" to 10" off the water. I notice better polyp extension. I'm considering raising it another inch or so. I do love that it's silent. I used to have a Nova Extreme Pro on my Nano and the fans were very loud. I'm also surprised at how well I can control the heat from the MHs. I have a ceiling fan in the room that is on a timer and comes on at the same time as the MHs. There are days when my heater kicks on while the MHs are running.

As for gravel, it's live sand made by CaribSea. The grain size is called Seaflor Special Grade. I spent a lot of time making that decision and I'm very happy with the sand. I used live sand because I didn't want to rinse it forever. I vacuum it regularly to keep it nice and white.

chrishayes - Thanks so much for your comments. It means a lot to hear that I add some value to this community. You are so right about always having a tank. I sat idle in the hobby for 10 years but always imagined different tanks.

As for the military, I don't have any military experience. I do work for a very large tech company and we do run a lot like I imagine the military does.

Der ABT - I do have a two separate tabs in the spreadsheet, one is for data entry of my test results and the other is a graph of the results. I've also incorporated upper and lower control limits. When my test results begin to trend to these limits or fail the limits, it tells me it's time to take action.

Sounds like I need to get a piece of that Monti. I'll take a look at it, I have just the location for another Monti.

Sahin - Thank you so much for the constructive feedback. I will admit that my last grouping of photos is not my best work. The main reason for the dark photos is that they were taken with just one bank of T5's on. The next time I get the camera going, I will get a few shots with the MH's running as well. As I said, thanks for the constructive feedback, the main reasons I post here is to 1) create a journal of my tank and 2) gain feedback/knowledge from others and how I can do a better job.
