December 31st, 2013 - My Favorite Images from 2013

As 2013 comes to a close, I wanted to journal my favorite images from the past year. The images below capture some of the things that I like or have liked most about my tank over the last year.

December 2013 FTS

This image represents what my tank looks like as the year comes to a close. While I'm always seeking more growth, better color, no cyano, less maintenance, etc. I'm proud to look back at the last year and I'm happy with where the tank is at.

FTS Reflection Shot

I just really like this picture. I think the color reflecting off the top of the water adds an element to the tank that is not easily view-able with it's current stand. One of my goals for the next year is to have a new stand built which will raise the tank about 12-15 inches.

Fish Trio

This photo really shows some good color in the tank along with a few of the fish. Pictured is one of my clown fish, which dates back more than 4 years ago and lived in the Nano Cube, also pictured is one of two LeMark Angels and one of two Bartlett's Anthias. I also love the jagged edge on the Monti Cap along with the softness of the Gorgonians.

Tort and Cap

Pictured here is a shot of what has become my two best growing and most pronounced corals. In the foreground is the Oregon Tort and in the background is the Purple Rimmed Green Montipora.

Mandarin

This Mandarin was my second attempt at keep one in the tank. Both times, I did not have any issues with them eating, however, both jumped out of my tank and were found on the floor in the morning. After the second jumper, I did some research and found out that they come to the surface for mating and often jump out of tanks. I found this odd since they spend all of their other hours hovering the surface of rocks/gravel.

Clown Hosting Torch

2013 was a big year as the clowns I've had for more than 4 years decided to finally host a Torch Coral. Up to this point, the closest thing they had ever hosted as the return nozzle. It turns out that what triggered the hosting was putting the coral in a very low flow area of the tank.

Watchman and Blue Tang

Unfortunately, my Yellow Watchman Goby is no longer in the tank (RIP) Shortly after rearranging the aquascape, I never saw the fish again. I'm afraid that he must of been trapped under a rock. I know my Pistol Shrimp is still in the tank as I often hear him clicking and can see where he's burrowed. I'm currently seeking a Yasha Goby as a replacement. This will be one of the first things I add in 2014.

Happy New Year, Brad! Great accomplishment and certainly an inspiration. Looking forward to your diary in 2014 and hope to see it more frequently updated, I'm sure we all want to learn from your experience.

Just read the whole thread impressive. The blue tang yellow watchman photo is my favorite r.i.p. I love yasha gobys they have such personality.

dtum - Happy New Year to you as well. Let's hope for great color and growth over the next year! I will definitely make a point of staying more current on my journal.

rivvir - Thanks for the view and comments.

How do you like that Giesemann Infiniti fixture? The quality looks amazing.

Jettareefer - I love the light fixture. I've never had any regrets on buying MH/T5 over LEDs. My favorite way to view the tank is with MH's only. The one thing that I do wish the fixture had was moon lights. One of the plans I have this year is to some how incorporate some moonlights into the existing fixture.

What mode do you run your vortechs on and what %

fishmanstan - I run Reef Crest at 100% all day with the exception of two 3 hour cycles of Nutrient Transport Mode. One NTM cycle in the morning and another at night. I have the WMX controller on my Apex so it's easy for me to program. If I had to manually change every day, I think I would just go with NTM the whole day. NTM provides better flow lower in the tank.

Thanks for the input. Your tank looks great it's really starting to fill in quite nicely, I agree halides provide the most natural and pleasurable viewing experience.

Wow, what an incredible to tank, the best I've seen! I'm actually embarrassed to go and look at mine but on the plus after reading this entire thread I now have a bazzilion improvements to make lol !

Great thread, very informative. Just a quick question about recurrent cyano. My nitrates are zero and phosphates are zero. My cyano clears after water changes and comes back after about a week. I was thinking of trying the coral snow as you noted. How did you dose your coral snow and what was your regimen? Thanks.

kodez - Thanks for your views and comments. There are some pretty incredible tanks here on RC so to hear you say one of the best means a lot.

One of my favorite threads on RC, always happy to see new entries by urbaneks.

Tradewinds - Thanks so much for the kind words

When I dose Coral Snow, I just dose per the instructions on the bottle. If you have not used it you will like the product. I'm not sold that it removes Cyano but it will make your water crystal clear. It's almost like it binds with any particles in the water and then becomes attracted to the skimmer.

synrg - Thanks for your view, comment and question.

For dosing, I use the BRS Cal, Mag and Alk solutions using a Bubble Magus Dosing Pump. For supplements, I dose KZ Coral Vitalizer, KZ Phol's Xtra Special, KZ Amino and KZ Bacteria per the instructions on the bottle. I also feed Reef Roids every 3-4 days.

urbaneks, Thank you for taking the time to explain every aspect of you tank build. I truly feel as though I have been inspired. I'm sure the whole ReefCentral community would love to see your tank again as the last photos were almost 8 months go.
