vinegar eels

I'm on the not sure band wagon. Why grow stuff in apple cider vinegar? Just for fun, or do fish eat them?

They are great, tiny little critters that are used to feed fish larvae and fry

Ok, next ignorant question. The "fish larvae and fry" you speak of...are they used as food, grown for show, both???

PS what are fry?

Fry = Larvae = Baby Fish (Depends on the fish and/or the stage of life as to what the babies are called)

The reasons for using vinegar eels are all of the above. It would be difficult to raise fish with vinegar eels just to feed them to something else. But, it is possible. Usually the use of these foods is to raise more desirable, ornamental fish. Vinegar eels are usually used with freshwater fish, but I'm sure saltwater would eat them, too.

Interesting...

If I ever decide to grow them, I'll have to call them something else because I'm sure my wife wouldn't be too excited about me growing "eels", even if they are small. lol

X=5 And I think you already figured out what the other post was talking about.

As for the vinegar eels, thanks for teaching me something new :D

Brad- It could be worse tell your wife you are raising worms.

I use these with my fresh water fry because they live in the tank for a few days and the babies love them. They are easily raised and good to have on hand in case of a surprise hatching.

Brad- I was just going to ask this question. How many here still keep FW tanks. I have the following FW tanks: a 37 gal. Neolamprologus helinathus tank (Tanganyika cichlid,) a 58 gal planted tank where I am watching my fish die of old age...sob. A 10 gal. tank for a pair of N. caudopunctatus that may not be a pair.

I always have a beta 2.5 gal tank. Lord knows why. Replace them and call them all Bob. Wonder if that is why I started dating a Bob...yikes! Checking him for gills!

I have a 55 fresh that is being "re-evaluated". I had a 13 " catfish that wouldn't leave anything else alone. Everything was lunch to him. We had him for 6-7 years and just recently gave hime to a friend with some ponds, so we can have some more peacefull and enjoyable fish. So in addition to my new 75 salt tank, I'm trying to get both of these up and running. I'll probably put some angelfish back in the fresh.

For the salt, my kids want a clown and tang, of course!!

I feed my N. helianthus fry the eels. This fish is a colonizing fish which means they parent the fry and there are different ages of their offspring in the tank. Older sibs help "babysit" the younger.
An interesting and beautiful fish.

You should consider doing your 55 as a Tanganyika ciclid tank. All these fish are beautiful, IMO and most are entertaining to watch. Most are aggressive as heck so care must be taken in stocking a tank.

I might consider that,

I use to have Labidochromis, but something happend [that I wish not to recall anymore:( ]

I think colonizing fish would be very entertaining for the whole family.

Do you have any pictures of your tank with the N. helianthus?

Also, what conditions do they require?
