Violently shaking overflow hoses

Hi everyone. I just plumbed and filled my Oceanic 120 tech tank today.

Everything seems to be working fairly well. The overflow itself is very quiet but the tubes that carry water into the sump seem to be bringing in a lot of air along with the water. Is this normal?

If I adjust the standpipes up this seems to lower the amount of bubbles but it also raises the level of water in the tank to a dangerous point.

The tubes (one more than the other) shake. From time to time one will shake a LOT and a gurgling noise will come out of it along with a lot more air.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Also, they are the oceanic overflow kits that were included with the tech tank.

They are vertically adjustable and some vertical positions seem to be have much better than others.

They are quiet for about 5 seconds after I adjust them (i assume they are flooded with water for a few so there is no air).

They have a siphon break on the side and a hole on top.

Im not sure what the Oceanic standpipes look like but, maybe you could fit one of those little green cheapo, airline control valves in hole in the top. This way you could regulate the amount of air. Maybe try partially covering the hole with a small piece of tape or something. Worth a shot.

Restricting the airflow some seems to make it worse. I'm starting to think I have too little air making its way in the top.

Anyone have any idea if an over or undersized pump would cause this type of problem?

Thanks

I have two separate 700gph pumps powering the two separate returns. Turning one of these pumps off silences the entire system. Of course the water coming back down into the sump is much slower out of both return lines and the level in the sump rises a bit. But there is no more gurgling sound from the overflow return lines.

So pretty much they are saying from what i understand is that your pump is pushing more water than the stand pipe likes to handle and that there is enough water there to almost start a full syphon but not enough to keep it going. Hense when you adjust it down it silences for just a few seconds enough time for the water level to come down to the level of the top of the drain. I would try drilling a larger hole in the top to let more air in to ballance the water falling in the pipe (trying to stop the gurgle). Or put a ball/gate valve between your pump and the display to slow down the return pump to ballance the draine and the return.

I had to slow down my pump to ballance mine out so that the drains aren't having a hard time keeping up with the water flow.

You are right on the very edge of the pumps putting too much back in the display. You don't see it as an overflow since the drains play catchup (the slurping). I bet if you left it for like a week you would see the tank water lever rise about a 1/2 inch.

You problem only need to reduce the return pumps but a very small amount. Maybe even leave one full and reduce one by a value a small amount.
