The colors don't look so good in that picture, but the lights are off, so I can't adjust in PS. I'll try tomorrow.

emerald crab health?

emerald crab health?

Fire shrimp, zoo's and sally lightfoot are fine -- all three emerald crabs seem to have perished. I am not sure at all that this is Vivid's problem -- I had two emerald crabs about 4 months ago and they lasted a bit longer. Any idea if there could be something in my tank that the emerald crabs do not like? I thought crabs were supposed to be fairly hardy -- my ricordia, 4 fish, zoanthids, duster, mushrooms, etc., all are fine and the water quality is good -- a bit of a problem with bubble algae, which is why I wanted those crabs!

Did you acclimate them, or just dump 'em in?

Paul

+1 with paul n billy. you say 'seem' do u not see them? or do u have the dead bodies? if ya dont see them its normal they hide as you probably already know this.

Alas the bodies are in the tank... and the Sally lightfoot expired sometime between last night and today. Acclimated using drip over 45 minutes... any chance a brittle star would attack them?

Photos of fireshrimp (dead sally in background) and zoanthids, along with what is left of the crab bodies (I have a big cleanup crew, lots of flow, not sure about the details of where everything else is at).

im at a loss. unless they werent healthy to begin with. where they white when ya got em or green like they should be? white bodies show a lack of eating and possibly die of starvation but i wouldnt think vivid would ship you starving emeralds. and copper is a big enemy but yea starfish, other snails n shrimp would die. outta three emeralds i have only lost one for no reason. i too acclimated the first one for an hour and lost in two days. the last two big jon n Guenevere i acclimated them for three hours and Guenevere though lil white around the edges and i thought i would lose her but she eats well is very healthy and is now very green. maybe if the salinity you received them in is a drastic change to yours maybe a 3 hour acclimation is called for.

Thanks for your thoughts. I just tested parameters, no amonia, no nitrite, 35ppm nitrate, and .6ppm phosphates which is the first time I've ever measured non-zero for phosphates, though I did test just an hour after feeding (I don't think I like this Formula Two I just bought for the first time). The crabs were green on delivery. At one point I saw the green hull floating in the tank, so I guess the green part gets separated from the white after they die. I do have two hermits in there that have been in their since I started the tank (tank about one year old, hermits maybe 10 months). My only other mail order for fish and coral was with alive2go (reefs2go?) and the zoanthids have been a big dissapointment --- the vivid zoanthids are awesome in comparison. I was hoping the emeralds would eat some of my bubble algae, but I don't think I'll brave another emerald for a while. I'll do a water change this weekend and see if I can bring the phosphate down (and I'll test again afterwards).

Hey Tod,

Sorry to hear about your emeralds. I just lost mine this week also. Their really interesting additions to a tank. Had him for about 8 months. The shell on mine never separated after it died. Kinda makes me wonder if something might have tried munching on yours. Is there anything in your tank you might consider aggressive towards them? Otherwise I would think it must just be bad luck, I don't believe emeralds have the longest life span. Most seem to report a year of life in the tank at most. To have three go at the same time however, really makes me wonder.

well im not really worried about your phos at .6 what i would be worried about is the 35ppm of nitrate in there. most report inverts death above 20ppm. maybe thats what killed your emeralds. to me 35 ppm of nitrate is too high lets get that down alot.

Good catch, I missed that. If 35ppm nitrate is correct, that could definitely be what did it.

Vivid's customer service is awesome. Full refund for the sally lightfoot and the 3 emerald crabs. Kudos to Austin and Zach at Vivid.
