Vlamingii Tang- Enough space?

Yeah! I could keep a Vlamingii eventually! Besides needing alot of space, I hear that there actually quite hardy (from some article in RK Mag)?

I had a very small juvi (about 2") in my 125. He outgrew my tank in about 8 mos. I have a good friend that bought one the same day as me. He bought his at about 4" outgrew his 220g and now is in his 450. Lets just say he kind of makes the 450g look small. Great fish, they just grow fast! By the way he has only had that fish for a little over a year and it is already 12"+!!!

I know it is not the best indicator for captive sizes, but.....I have dived with schools of them in the Maldives....and on the reef they do get about two feet long.

What about in a 72"L x 36"W x 24"T?

I think the length is more important than that 36" width.

Sorry for the confusion, but I'll be able to have a tank with these dimensions: 8' x 4' x 3' (700 gal). You guys don't think thats big enough for a vlamingii?

my LFS just put a 10" vlamingi in a 6ft high, 4ft wide, 10 ft long Fish Only With Fake Rock and Corals (FOWFRC) lol

there aren't a lot of fish in the tank with him, but he shares the waters with 2 1.5ft long black tip reef sharks that seem to leave him alone

every tuesday, the store has a live feeding of the tank with squids. The skarks get the large pieces and whatever scraps begin to sink belong to the other fish

I suspect that you will have one of the happiest vlamingis around. Is your tank big enough? I suppose you'll find out. Certainly though, your vlamingi will be better off than 98% of the ones that get purchased!

Mine is in a 6' x 4' - 400 gallon...but I'm concerned that eventually, he'll outgrow my tank....and probably sooner than I expect.

Finally, if this isn't the first tank the fish will start in..then plan to build the bigger tank FAST.

I just added a vhalminji tang and my blonde naso is bullying it but not as bad as when I added another blonde naso. I thought he was going to kill it. When does the bullying stop? Also my v/tang is getting braver. He eats and swims at the top while the blonde is at the bottom. By the way my V/tang is 3-4" and my blonde is anout 6-7".

I think it is and I was eventually going to go from a 150 to a 300. 700 is more than enough IMO :)

Well...give the vlamingi about 3 months and he will be bigger than the blonde. That should settle things down.

Here is one in our 700g(10x3x3) Reef at work. This fish motors around that tank all day. They get huge. I wouldnt keep it in anything smaller than an 8ft tank.

Judging by the all the questions you have all over this boared I think you have a long ways to go before setting up a 700 gallon.

Your tang is taking on a mature look, Aquaman... I think you see very few get their mature colouration. Probably because they outgrow most tanks before they get there!

How long have you had him?

I had to check my records to believe it, but I've only had mine 7 months and he has grown from about 1.5" to 7"+... Seems like I've had him longer than that, but I suppose that is why one should keep records.

tangers & BrianD: Oh yeah, a 700 gal would definately not be for couple years at least. I'm still setting up my 135. Although, after thinking awhile, I don't think I'll bother trying to get a huge tank just to keep a Vlamingii.
