Vodka dosing and BB tanks

I could use the help in all of these areas. Plus, I can't stand the increased skimmate smell often associated with ozone addition.

It is recommended that you run ozone with vodka.

My skimate is not really getting any stinkier, perhaps it is because I am still doseing at only 0.45 ML/Day.

I thought you just got more skimmate with vodka and not necessarily stinkier skimmate. I could be wrong.

When i was dosing 5 ml aday my skimmate used stink bad.But then again its all in how you run your skimmer.but if you start using vodka and dont make any changes to your skimmer you will see a change.i think its mainly all that extra bacteria your exporting.My skimmer used to foam pretty hard at that level.

Altho i did start dosing again today.Ive been noticing alittle more cyno patches than normal.So i'm gonna see how long the vodka takes to wipe them out,then stop again.

I already started dosing again.But now its just to see how fast cyno will die,as i have noticed alittle more than my normal small patches.(altho it is time for me to change my rwophos)

i dose just as the instructions say to do,My last known dosage to keep param where i want them was 5ml on 150g's.and that was after backing down from the bloom.But remember that depends on a few things. Biload and feeding.Nitrate/phos levels.My tank has grown alot since i last used,but i will go 2 ml and stop there for awile.
Just for the heck of it what are your nitrate and phos readings?

I don't use any phospate media, and I have never been able to detect any phospate. My nitrate is somewhere between 5 and 10 according to last night's readings, both with salifert test kits.

Subsequently to this initial week you increase the vodka dose by 0.5 mL per total tank volume (this is important, do not dose on a per 100L basis, but on the total tank volume!) every week.

So, e.g. for a 500 L tank:

day 1-3: 0.1 * 5 = 0.5 mL
day 4-7: 0.2 * 5 = 1 mL
2. week (day 8-14): 1 mL + 0.5 mL = 1.5 mL
3. week: 1.5 mL + 0.5 mL = 2 mL.

As far as important, total tank volume not 100ml...i am confused on how to calculate...I have a 40breeder on day 7 and am not sure on what to jump up to?....does it mean just do .5ml and go up if needed, or is there some equation to figure?

Yes i belive 500l is about 125g's so you would cut that in alittle more than 1/2 but tank size really does not matter. it's water volume, so your 40g tank may only have 30g's of water.

One of the things that was stressed repeatedly in the article that was never published here, is that you MUST Moniter your tank for P & N, and very importantly, never let them drop to Zero. It's one of the reasons I stopped dosing, I cant prove to myself that I have P or N. It always reads Zero.
I've seen it written here that you think you have very low PO4 levels. Be careful.

Good information Hef.

I am no longer dosing vodka as of today. I don't know if it was because of the vodka, or the increaced water clarity after dosing, or after getting my live rock back in and cooking my LR, but I am having some bleaching problems. Accually I think I should have acted faster, but I was slowly lowering my photo period to counter act this, and I should have gone faster with it. Some of my corals are showing a small amount of STN from the bottom, and I was getting poor PE when the hilide was on, so I cut the hilide off compleatilly, I will ramp it up 15 min per week, the first week will be no MH.

I am now lighting the tank with 2 55 W PC's and one 40W 10K NO (50 gallon 4 foot tank). I am hopeing to brown the corals out a little doing this, I will continue to feed with cyclop-ese, and cromo max, phyto max, and zoo max, as normal.

Does any one here see any problems with my plan??? Do you suggest anything else?

Sorry to hear about the STN. I hope the vodka was not the cause. How much vodka were you dosing?

I was dosing at 0.45 ml/day. I really feel that this is a light/water clarity issue because the corals most affected were directally under the MH bulb, and there was bleaching involved as well.

I have made a lot of changes in a short time (dumb) so it is impossible to say, but in the last month my rock came out of cooking and went back in the tank, and I started using vodka. Putting the rock back in made the water clearer, and so did the vodka, so it could be a combined effect.
