vodka dosing

It will effect your liver with the lil snipits you take here and there. lol jk,
On a seriuse note, welcome to the world of vodka. You will be amazed at the results.

Never heard of any ill effects from normal usage. Just read up thoroughly and stay on top of what you are doing. There are really bad things that can happen if you do it wrong.

Make sure you have a good skimmer, rated to preferably twice the capacity of your tank to provide good aeration. The bacteria produced will lower the oxygen content in the water. Overdosing can/will produce a bacterial bloom and likely suffocate everything in the tank.

Do your research and take your time! Nitrates/phosphates won't drop overnight.

Good luck, it's been working great for me so far.

I've been toying with the idea of vodka dosing. However, I read on one thread (that did not have very many replies) that your skimmer needs to have a mesh mod? I just looked over the ReefKeeping article on it and saw no mention of this mesh mod.

I have an SRO XP-2000SS for my 70g so I think my skimmer is more than enough to handle the lower dissolved O2 levels.

Was the post I saw misinformed?

What's this vodka dosing?

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/index.php

Supplies a fuel source for bacteria, which in turn consume nitrate and to a lesser extent phosphates.

Produces very clear water. Results on nutrients can take a few weeks though.
You don't necessarily need a mesh wheel skimmer, just a well functioning one, over sized is preferable. You'll want to skim wet too.

The article lays out a very safe way to start and find your maintenance point.
