Vodka dosing

I dose my vinegar direct into my kalk stirrer. It is controlled by a reef controller. I dose about 3.2ml every hour, over a 24 hour period. I would not recommend dosing all your vinegar in one shot. Timed release protects against PH drops and carbon overdosing.

When you dose vinegar with kalk, do you add the vinegar directly to a kalk reactor?

I've never dosed vodka, but my theory is that it lowers the Coral's inhibitions, so they let more color show... :wildone: bad joke... I know.

So.. What little I've read - do you only want to dose vodka or vinegar ONLY IF you run a skimmer?

I wouldnt do it without a skimmer. You need a lot of aeration, or you will crash your tank fast.

ok i just started dosing vodka lastnight as a matter of fact,im on the fence between vinegar or vodka?
vinegar seems to be some what a safer method? or am i wrong?
vodka has cyano out breaks and vinegar dosent correct?

Some people have experienced less cyano with vinegar. I seem to have the same amount of cyano (not much), regardless of which method I use. I've tried vodka, VSV, and just plain vinegar.

Vinegar is best for me, because I also use it to concentrate my kalkwasser. I kill 2 birds this way. Personally, I think that a nice blend of vodka and vinegar may be a nice way to go, but you have to make sure that you get your doses correct. Small mistakes in vodka are far less forgiving that vinegar. e.g. "oops, i overdosed 5ml."

That could kill a tank with vodka, but wouldn't phase most tanks with vinegar (due to a much weaker concentration).

So I went down to correct the dose today I put 10ml in, and noticed Ll my corals are fully opened like I have never seen, everything looks good except the brown patch's on the sand bed.

were did u figure out how much vin to dose? im goin to vinegar also. i just need a starting point to dose??

I have the instructions on what measurements and how much to dose. However what stuff is people using to does? Where are some people buying the equipment to dose. or better yet if you have pics please post them, I am trying to get an idea and right now drawing blanks.

Simplest way to go is search for Genetic's (IIRC) Reefkeeping article on the subject. It's not a simple matter of pouring the vodka in a shot glass and dumping it in the tank. It's also a progressive dose, very small to start with, and over several weeks you work your way up, then back off to a maintenance dose. If you have a dosing system, you can dilute the daily dose, and drip it throughout the day, I do mine all at once when I'm on a vodka program. Haven't done it fro a while now.

That's why I linked it up in post 31 :)

There is a wealth of useful information available. Though admittedly more difficult due to the fact that one has to search read and comprehend, it is usually more productive to use source material than to query the rabble.

Sorry I didn't catch that Nate's article was linked in the vinegar article. I've used his specific method with a lot of success.

I would recommend keeping a detailed daily journal for anyone attempting to dose any organic carbon source. Like I said before it's not a matter of dumping some vinegar, sugar, or vodka in a shot glass, and pouring it in the tank.

To LukeG - The amount of vodka you would dose in 9 gallons would be miniscule. Without a skimmer you'd likely kill everything in your tank.
