i noticed after using vodka for a few months i had an increase in cyano. stopped dosing vodka and the cyano slowly went away. anybody have a reason for the cyano blooms?
I'm sure you're aware that cyano is actually a bacteria and not an algae. So, what's happening is that over time the "good" bacteria diminished a bit, and the small amount of cyano that was in your tank the whole time started to get more carbon from the vodka dosing, causing it to start getting out of control. That's why it's a good idea to dose bacteria in addition to the carbon source.
Myself, I dose VSV and MB7. I put a Fiji Purple in my T5 setup which caused a bit of a spike in the small amount of cyano that was in my tank. For the last couple weeks I've only been dosing the MB7, and once the cyano goes away I'll slowly re-introduce the VSV dosing.
