nitrate is high can i use vodka to lower my nitrate? what kind
of vodka? do i need to water change after i use vodka? i have 220 gal reef tank how much vodka do i need? thanks

Good advice. I would try to figure out where you nitrate is coming from. Feeding, needing a better skimmer, water change frequency, etc.... first. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. Though I will admit I've seen some awesome pictures of SPS tanks that use vodka.

Most of the time a fish's stomach is about as large as its eye. Granted that isn't for ALL fish but for quite a lot. A clownfish for example may act like it wants to eat 10 mysis but could probably only stuff maybe 3-4 in there. They also wont starve despite acting hungry so feed fish sparingly, high quality ingredients. What you feed them ends up in the tank through their waste so strained frozen will definitely contain less unwanted nutrients than say, dry flake or pellet food. I feed a variety but do so sparingly. Just make sure their stomachs aren't pinched and that they have a stable energy level and you should be able to feel confident they are fed enough.

I think my fish could be near exploding from being fed and *still* act like they are hungry. They deserve an emmy for their acting ;p

You must have a really good skimmer and go VERY VERY SLOW.

Read, read read first

Vodka can and will kill your inhabitants if you don't read up first.

If used correctly and slowly you can see great results.

This is good advice!

Don't put vodka, sugar, or vinegar in your tank until you are sure of what you are doing... These carbon sources are really intended for the reefer who wants to run an UNLS... Vodka keeps the nutrients low, so you can supplement with aminos, coral feeding foods, and coloring products without raising nitrates and phosphates. It has also been noted that one should not run GFO while dosing vodka, can throw your nitrate to phosphate relationship off.... BE SMART and READ FIRST... GL

I would mix the Vodka with some Orange Juice. You'll still have a nitrate problem, but it wont bother you as much. Seriously though, how about a plenum in your sump?

i would also check your rockwork i know this sounds crazy. but on tanks where i could not get good flow in my tank detritus accumulated in dead spots and caused my nitrates to climb..
i now employ plyle02 old method on his 75 where less is more
