Hahn reefrubble is using 8-32 screws,do you think 4-40's would work better if he used more of them?

Yes. More pins, smaller pins.

Hahn i counted 54 screws, how about 100 4-40 screws,do you think that would be enough?

Chris , That may be true , but The holes that are in there now are for 8-32 screws . I think it would take a lot of work to fill in the holes that are there now , and drill new ones . Ted

Upgraded to an 8'' neck. Works even better now.

Well I am out of the club now...I sold the 1860 Beast last night!

Yenkari - I am not sure why you're always posting pictures of your skimmer on here? You have a nice skimmer, but its not built like or setup like a volcano.

I think this thread got so far off track even the Volcano owners stopped posting. Ah, such is life.

Skimmernut..
Why are you posting here then? You dont own a volcano nor something even similar to a volcano now.
FYI if you will get 2 more BKs you can get back to the club.

Maybe 3 :)

I am sorry, I was just teasing. I am a bit jealous too as we dont have supermarines here yet. I would replace mine with a few SM 300s aswell..::D

well, I haven't stopped posting because the thread got too far off track :), I stopped posting because I got super busy, and there wasn't much to post/update. I am working on getting a Laguna pump (w/ modified volute, etc) to try on our Volcano. I know that others are testing them out now as well and have heard some pretty impressive specs on what they have been able to achieve with those pumps. Right now it is a waiting game for the pump to arrive, which will be next month some time (hopefully).

I have still been trying to "tune" the dart, but have not had alot of success. I did get some very thick skimmate collected, but it is way too thick (dry), and I already have the water up to the top of the twistlock, I don't want to raise it too much more as it becomes a hassle whenever I need to clean the collection cup.

I also bumped the fitting on the bottom of the collection cup that was for connecting the water line for the wet neck. It is the one weak point on the skimmer (not welded, just glued) and it broke loose. So I am glad that it is not skimming too wet. I have a rag tied around it to slow the leak down and plan to take it down, clean, dry and repair it this weekend. I could glue it in place, but would rather wait until I have the time to do it right.

Well after trading some equipment for one of these beasts I'm in the club. First impression, since it was torn down when I got it, is the bubble plate seems to be way to restrictive. Instead of a bubble plate with lots of smallish holes this bubble plate has relatively few larger holes. I'm guessing that could be causing some of the back pressure on the pump? So the first order of business is to fill that plate with holes. I'll take some before and after shots later on. Next I want to open the pump and take a good look at the NW. Since my brother has the CNC stuff I think a new NW will be made, but I would like to hear some suggestions. I know that it will need lots of pins (I remember Klause posting some general info) but how many and how far apart I guess are kind of a crap shoot? Even though we have the equipment available I would rather not make 10 prototypes before coming up with one that works good. Besides if we do come up with a great new NW for these skimmers maybe I can share them with fellow owners or something.

Here is the current bubble plate (24, 1/2" holes):

The NW and pump was actually a reeflo gold according to a sticker I found on it (maybe it won't need to be replaced after all):

I took the volute off to check on how the venturi was inserted and found a big blob of silicone (I removed that, but I don't know how much or a problem it was creating); also I saw that the venturi is just cut flush with the inner pipe wall:

Lastly I went ahead an filled it with fresh water to see how it would work (with out the bubble plate):

I was actually kind of impressed at the air it was sucking in, but it was easy to see it does need a bubble plate. The pump creates a vortex in the water that would probably interfere with skimming.

it will perform much differently with saltwater, I would not base any of your modifications on the fresh water run.
