Volitan and Wolf Eel Compatability?

My brother is selling his Volitan (large grapefruit size) and another guy is interested but he keeps a good sized wolf eel and wants the lion for that tank.

I don't really think there would be, but does anyone see any issues with this?

It's a 75 and the eel is the only inhabitant so far. I can't say for certain what size the eel is other than what I've been told as decent size.

I don't know bout the eel .but a 75 will be way too small for a volitan I had one in a 90 that out grew it in bout 6 months. He now lives in a 125.

I don't know anything about keeping aggressive species, so I'll defer to your judgement. I thought lions were pretty much like cardinals how they kind of stay in the same basic spot, just hovering there. I've also seen them hugging rocks but again, I don't know.

I would check with some more experienced guys, but from what I have experienced, the volitan should be fine in a 55. Common knowledge suggests that a 10-12" volitan should do just fine, if he gets any bigger than that I would look at moving him.

Nice try contestant, but the correct answer is a volitans will definitely outgrow a 55 gal setup. In fact, our volitans has outgrown 3 tanx since we got her as a tiny 1.5" juvie. It now resides in the spacious setup behind the curtain where the lovely seahorsedreams is standing...

OK...so it's been a long day and I'm punchy. However, in all seriousness, a full-grown volitans really should be in a setup that's at LEAST 18" wide, and is properly aquascaped to allow sufficient "turnaround" room. In fact, a 24" wide setup like a 48" x 24" x 20" 100 gal or 48" x 24" x 24" 120 gal both make super nice setups for large-bodied lionfish.

IME, when lions have sufficient room to swim around, they do so, and they are much less "boring" as some folks put it. They really do become different fish, and nothing is as impressive as a full-grown volitans cruising regally about.

+1 Greg, since moving mine into the 125 it's always out and about. I knew he was big but seeing him fins spread and everything just adds to it.

i have the smaller species. i had the rocks set up in a way where they would "hug" the rocks. i could see them. that part was good

so i started to experiment with different set ups. i would probally change the set ups about once a week to see the fish reaction. i found that if lions have the room to swim they will

also slow moving tank mates will help them be comfortable.

i have a ghost eel with my fuzzies and my fuzzies move like tangs IMO

i think a wolf eel and a V. lion would do just fin in a 120 or larger tank

I personally have a volitan and a green wolf eel. They have been in the same tank with each other for more than 2 months and they don't even share the slightest interest in one another.

I have a v/lion wolf eel and m/grouper in a 75. I used it to let the lion and other 2 grow and grow it did. This weekend it's moving to a150 gallon. It is definitely very active and moves all over the tank so the bigger one is going to be great. All the fish get along with occasional territory spats between the grouper and eel over caves. If the fish are given places to retreat to and of a similar size I don't think aggression is going to be a problem as much as tank size will be.

I had a 3+ foot thick as a baseball bat brazlillian dragon moray eel with a volitan larger than a grapefruit and a russel's larger than a softball in my 300, they didnt go anywherre near each other.
