Volitan with triggers and puffers ???

I really want to get a Volitan Lion. I have a 265 (360 gallon total). I have 8 fish (niger, picasso, yellow tang, blue tang, naso tang, kole tang, stars/stripes, dog face puffer). Do you think a lion would work in this tank ?any thoughts?

I wouldn't. The puffer and trigger would nip at the lions fins and mosty likly kill him. Puffers and triggers aren't always good tankmates. Some people have had them together and some haven't.

My puffers and trigger get along fine. I've had them for about two years now with not problems. I may take the chance with the lion. Is there another type of lion that would be better?

I wouldn't go for any of the dwarf lions, they would be too small and would most likely die. Your best best is probably what you have already suggested.

I've got a Clown Trigger, Picasso Trigger, and 2 Puffers with a Volitan and a Fuzzy Drawf lion. I've never had a problem. The only time any nipping occurs is at feeding time and it's accidental. Then my Volitan pops whoever the culprit was and that's the end of it. I think alot depends on the lion. Mine is a tough SOB so nobody messes with him.

I aslo have a large volitans who has been in tanks with numerous puffers, triggers and large angel.....all of which supposedly nip lion fins. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY FISH NIP AT HIS FINS!!!! If another fish gets too close he fans out his fins and opens his mouth wide open and swims straight at them. People have said that the canthigaster species tend to nip more. I have had 8 different species of arothron puffers and 5 different types of triggers, none have ever nipped a lion.

That's kinda what I thought. I think alot of people "spread the rumor" that lions get there fins nipped. I'm glad to hear from people that have actually had lions and puffers and triggers. I think I will give it a try. My triggers and puffers seem very easy going so I think it will be fine. I will post my experience.

Depends on the personality of the puffer....if you are talking a small (canthigaster genus) puffer then NO with lions. Ditto for porcupines as they tend to be more nippy than arothron's (dogfaces, mappas, stars and stripes, guineafowls, goldens, etc)

Since you have two arothrons (together I might add) they seem to be pretty laid back (they would have to be to live together successfully). Like all puffers they probably get a bit of tunnel vision during feeding but in a tank that size that is easy to overcome.

Do a large lion which means either P. Volitan or a Russell's lion. Size the specimen close to your puffer's size or a bit smaller. The MOST important thing is to aquascape the lion a cave he can get away from things in in a low flow zone

I have 3 Volitans, 1 fuzzy, Pinktail & dogface together trouble free right now. I have had the trigger and lions together for 1 1/2 years but the puffer is my new addition.

IMO- I do not think this is just a rumor because I have read to many post on lions being killed by Puffers and Triggers. Keep an eye on the lions fins, it could happen. If not right away than in 2 Months or 2 years, than again maybe never, but it is something to watch for. I check my lions fins everyday.

Considering that the lion's fins are poisonous, I'd think most triggers and puffers would know better than to mess with them, and if they didn't, they'd sure as hell learn pretty quickly.

But just to be sure, I'd get a lion that's bigger than the others.

This is true, the tables can turn, my Kole tang harassed a lion (it was mean) it was stung and dead in about 30 minutes. My trigger wanted the lions food and was stung but lived.
