Vortech or Tunze pumps

I'm debating between 2 x MP10 wES or 1 x MP40 or go with a pair of Tunze streams.

I have a 58 gallon tank and I plan to have all kinds of corals. I also have an apex controller, so keep in mind that whatever I get will need to be controlled by it.

Let me know your thoughts.

I'm partial to Tunze for their silence. There is a new controllable nanostream coming in a couple months, the 6095. Very wide outlet(wider than the 6205), 20w, 2650 GPH, and the same size as a typical nanostream. You'd be able to control the Tunze with your APex right now.

How do you handle the size of the tunze? Don't they take up more space in your tank when compared to the vortechs.
 
Yes they do take up more size, about double. I'd rather have absolutely nothing in the tank, it is the price I am willing to pay for silence, and high reliability. Some cannot stand the size of it, so go for the vortech. Also for myself, all 3 sides are viewable, so having a powerhead stuck on both the inside and outside of the tank sticks out on mine. The Tunzes are against the back wall in the upper corners.

You cannot go wrong with either Tunze or Ecotech....they are both great companies, products, and have great service. There are just a handful of major pros and cons between the two that should dictate your choice.

I will be getting the 6095s when they are out. I prefer the wide flow, and only use my 6105s at 80-90% of their max anyways. The nanostream sizes are not nearly as offensive in my tank.
 
the vortechs doesn't make that much sound IMO. one of my tanks (57g) i first started out with one MP40esw, but had to dial it down half way.

Depending how much rock you have and the rock work, you may or may not need two MP10esw.

The tunze would take too much space and at 55g any space you have becomes very valuable.

I have a MP10WES, and you can only hear a hum when its at the highest settings. 2 notches below 100% you don't hear it. Im waiting on my 2nd one right now, actually.



I would just get the right size to where you can tone them down to ~85/90%, and they will not make noise. You just have to make sure the dry side and wet side are aligned. Its pretty easy to do. Just move it around slightly on full speed to where its the quietest.


I was able to create a 1.5" wave on my 40 breeder with just the one MP10.
 
i forgot to mention on my 57g tank i only have one MP10esw. I got a ton of corals, frags, 3 anemones on this tank and it's doing great with just one.

I like the idea on having the pump(s) on the back as aposed to both sides. Are both pumps able to run on the back wo issue?
 
+1 for Tunze. Vortechs were unreliable and mine were loud. If you have other noisy equipment you wont notice them. I have a basement sump and my overflow is silent so their noise was very noticeable.

Pretty much the same situation with my tank. I have a soundproofed stand, my tank right now is dead silent. The only time anything is audible is when you are about 6 inches or less from where the Tunzes sit, you can hear the faintest whirr. With the Vortech, I could hear them in the rooms adjacent to the room the tank is in.

Yes, although you may not have all the flow actions like wavemaking.....not sure how it would do there. You could always email Tim at EcoTech and see what he suggests for what you need. He had taken alot of time going over options for me when I was considering trying Vortechs again.
 
I needed and run two mp10w es on a 50G. I had just one but it wasn't enough flow. They are both mounted on the back glass and are synchronized for wave action. Seems to be working pretty well as they do also create turbulence aside from the wave action. No detritus buildup at all. Everything stays in suspension until eventually exiting via the overflow. I think the mp40s would have been too over-sized for my tank.

i love my vortech. i also love their customer service. i bought a used one that was still under warranty, felt like it was too loud, sent it back and they sent me a new one, no questions asked!

i love all the different settings you can play with also. i'm currently using the lagoon mode which my lps love, but used to run it in a wavemaker style mode (i think it was called reef crest mode). its awesome and takes up very little room.
