Ok guys since some of you already know about my plans for a makeover / re-do project on my 180 mix, I would like to hear your opinion on these two systems. any past experiences, disslikes and defenetly what you like about them and if there were any issues, how easy or difficult was to take care of the problem (if any). my intentions are not to turn this thread in to this system is better than that system, so lets look at your personal experience. I am in the process of buying some equiptment and would love to buy base on experience rather that an advetisment, thank you all.

you can't go wrong with either. vortechs do have more bells and whistles included and tunzes bells and whistles cost extra. another thing you have to consider since you have your tank next to your tv is noise from the pumps. either way you go will be a good choice.

I can only speak up about the Vortech MP40W. I have two of them on my 300 and they do a fantastic job. I did have some problems with them at first but the customer service from the company was second to none. It was explained to me why I was having the problems that I was having. They were prompt on sending the parts needed right away. I picked them over the Tunze mostly because I liked the idea of not having the electricity or the added heat in the tank.

I was running 3 vortech mp40's on my 120g back in Buffalo. I used the wave feature to rock the water and create a static wave--this works much better on a tank with greater length compared to width though. Very impressive, but expensive. Only downfall is timing the frequency based upon the dimensions of the tank. This can take hours and is a huge pain in the butt...

Ok, since I see more Vortech users, I need to ask the question about the the level of noise that these puppies make (base on what I have read). In your opinion, have this system aggravated you at some point or is it livable noise and how difficult really are these Vortechs to program. thanks guys, this very valuable information for me.

If it is dead silent in the room you might just hear a very slight bit of noise from the mp40 Under normal day to day life you will not even notice them at all. The noise level all has to do with having them aligned on the glass as close to perfect as possible. I can get mine off just a slight bit and they can be noisy, if I get them out more than a slight touch then they can be very noisy.
As far as programing them, it is very easy with the instructions in the book. You can sync them or not. I don't run mine in sync mode nor do I use them to make a wave. I don't think you can go wrong with them. this is JMO

If the location of the tank is in an area that tank noise is a concern, you are definitely taking a risk with the vortech pumps. On my tanks, the Mp40 and MP 20 were the most noticable sounds from the tank. This is due in large part to the sound changing as the pump speeds up an slows down. IME, with 2 vortechs for over 2 years, they have greater maintenance needs than a Tunze. I had to overhaul or replace the wet sides annually to keep good performamce.
I replaced the vortechs with Tunzes. The Tunze is definitely much more quiet then the vortechs. You cannot hear them operate. The Tunze is a much simpler design and appears to require less maintenance amd parts replacement. However, the vortechs have a smaller tank footprint, no cord in the tank, and was easier to change the flow programs than the Tunze. Both pumps provide amazing flow. The Vortechs have the awesome undertow and the Tunze can produce very high turbulence zones farther from the pump. You have to be more careful with Tunze placement since they can blast a coral with too much flow if placed too close. The more dispersed flow from the vortech makes pump placement much easier.

Hi everyone, well where do I start. sorry for not sharing any updates on the make over, but as of last week that tank is out of the TV room, clean and stored in the garage (sorry for not posting any pictures, I just havent learn how to upload them to this site) lots have happen since we last talk. I am in the process of going on an overseas job through my company for 8 months, if everything goes thru, I will be leaving el paso to Taiwan on october the 10th, hopping to return by may of next year.
I like to thank everyone that post here with your input, I appreciate everything you all shared and especilly the fine and wonderful people at The Coral Reef (Daniel and his wife) for the help and support on letting me keep most of my live stock in their care, until I return.
If the contract does not go thru, God willing I will start setting it up and sharing every update with you all as soos as possible. thanks guys and happy Reefing,
