Well I have had my MP 10 for a couple of months now, and I like everything about it except for the noise. This thing is far from silent. I have made sure I have had it lined up correctly, but you can still hear it wind up and slow down in the different modes and pulse mode drives me nuts. Does anyone have a vortech that is silent or even quiet? I can't decide if I want to keep using it or not simply because of the noise.

I don't have the 10, but have the MP40, and it is "generally" fairly quiet. I can definitely hear it ramp up and when in pulse mode also. Maybe others will chime in with some advice on how to quiet these things up.

my MP20 was almost dead silent in reefcrest mode, I only noticed the noise in short pulse mode. My MP40 is a different story, it is definetely audible in all modes...

I like my mp 10. It looks good, very controllable, I love the different modes. But it is loud. I wish I could hear another one to see if it is just mine that makes the noise.

If I may ask on this thread, I have an original MP-40 which I got the wireless upgrade a while back and I can't seem to get the "nighttime" mode to work. I follow the directions and each time I do it it freezes up and gives me an error message. Is there a trick to this or am I doing it wrong?

We have an MP10 and would not call it quiet. It's pretty noticable on the tank we have it on.

We have an MP40 on two other tanks and we don't notice it as much there, possibly in part because those tanks are generally much noisier. But the 20 gallon that the MP10 is on is a pretty quiet tank and the MP10 is definitely not what you'd consider quiet. we run it in reef crest mode and not on full speed.

I would say my experience with the MP40 is about like the above as well. I can hear it, to me it's not overly loud, and I find it way preferable to the startup clatter and general noise level of the MJs I was using before.

Side note: I was skeptical whether these pumps were really worth the money when I got it a year ago, but I'm a believer now. Ironically, I got mine days before I was laid off, so the timing was really good.;)

My 40 was loud enough I finally went with maximodes. Not that it was overly noisy, just more than I wanted in the livingroom. Next tank with have streams or some other intank system.

@frugalreefer - I currently have an mp10 and it is no where near as loud as any of the HOB skimmers I've had. Quieter than a Koralia nano and it doesn't have that click-clack sound that most powerheads have when they start up because its dc. Even with the flow rate turned up all the way I would still say that its not as loud as the fan on my pc.

I did this as well. My 40 was too noisy, and too unreliable. I sent it back 5 times, currently its in a box waiting to be sent back again just so I can sell it as a working item.
