Vortechs on a woody

I am considering ordering a couple of vortechs for a new plywood and epoxy/fiberglass tank I am building. My question is, the sides are built with 3/4" plywood, but the addition of fiberglass and epoxy will add about 1/10 of an inch, for a thickness of 0.85" instead of 0.75". Will the vortechs still work at this thickness??

You will probably have trouble. The wet side will work but the dry side will probably fall down. If you can create a bracket to hold the dry side in place, you probably will not have problems.

Additionally, MP40 units will most likely stall under this configuration because of the disconnect protection; the pump will think it's disconnected. However, the MP40w will probably be ok because it lacks the disconnect protection.

I can't make any promises, but if you affix the dry side some how, you should be ok.

You might not like this idea, but you could hollow out the plywood where the pump is likely to be. That way it could recess inside 1/4" perhaps.

Hey Marc,

I thought about that and decided against it, mainly because I have never used power heads, always had a closed loop, so I am a little unsure about placement. I am thinking that one vortech will go on each end, one toward the front of the tank and lower on the side, and one toward the back higher on the side.

The other solution is to put glass on the sides also, even though this will be an in-wall tank. The tank is going to be 55" x 40" x 28" external dimensions with a 1/2" starphire front. Its adds a little cost, but would allow me to place them where needed.

Putting glass on the sides would allow you to take some nice EOT (End of Tank) shots from inside your fishroom. Sounds like it will be a very nice tank. Guys on the east coast love their plywood tanks. ;)
