Waitei Anthias purchase

I just picked up 3 of these fish from Live Aquaria last night. They are currently going through the TTM and then into my 30g QT. They will then receive a 2 round Prazipro treatment.

I know they are difficult fish to keep, so I am just looking for some advice and recommendations. I know they are picky eaters, so I have a variety of frozen foods on hand.

In regards with pellets and flake.....any recommendations on what I can throw into my auto fish feeder to supplement . I currently have the Apex Crossover pellets and the Hikari Marine S pellets but I am thinking the Apex pellet may be a bit too big. I am looking to buy the NLS pellets....which one would be best for their color preservation and overall health.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am in the middle of TTM with a variety of Anthias right now. I couldn't get them to eat until I added a powerhead to the tank. As soon as there was food to chase they started eating. Normally with TTM it's not recommended to use anything other than an airstone and a heater... now I have to run out and buy a second powerhead toady.... it worked though.

Thanks for the advice!! I run an air stone and a heater as well. Have you been feeding them daily through each of the TTM's ? What I have done in the past for my fish is to only feed them on the day I am going to transfer the fish from one tank to another, so as not to pollute the tank. I run a dose of prime daily, so I am not too worried about ammonia.

BUT....I know Anthias need to eat more often and frequently. These are my first Anthias, so something is telling me that I am going to have to try and get some food into them.

I do have a bunch of small koralia powerheads I can run to get them moving around the tank. Right now they are just hiding behind a piece of PVC.

Only feeding on the day u transfer them? How quickly are you transferring them?
I may be wrong on my TTM, cuz I don't do it, but aren't they supposed to stay i. Each tank a couple weeks? X3 tanks or so.

I am totally polluting the tank with food. All day, every day. I do siphon out excess now daily and add extra NSW. I have an annomia alert badge. It has never shown any sign. I am probably over feeding.....

I have never done this before, I don;t really know what I am doing but they are now on day 10 and all are eating like pigs.

Each transfer is no longer than 72 hours.

I have 5 fish in 10-12 gallons.

I do the standard protocol for TTM. Transferring every 3 days, in the morning before the 72 hour mark. I do a total of 4 transfers that total 12 days. I use a pair of 10 gallon tanks, a heater, and a throw away air stone. I cover the tank with fish net that you use for clamming...I get it cheap at my bait and tackle store.....I cut it up into 4 pieces so no net is being used twice.

I normally only do one or two fish at a time. I have had good success with only feeding heavy on the day of the transfer. More food equals more waste and pee....which equals more ammonia. I know prime will handle the toxic ammonia, but I don't want crazy nitrates with excess feeding.

I match the shipping bags water with my tank water. I let the SG raise naturally due to evaporation with the air stone running wide open. By the time I am done with the TTM...the SG is almost dead on to what my QT is (1.025). If it's not close...I just drop the SG of my QT to match...so that way they just go right into the QT.

I will keep a fish in QT for about a month, since I do a double round of Prazipro treatment for prophylactic purposes.

With a more active fish like Anthias....especially mine that is consider difficult care...I am going to do some feeding everyday to make sure they don't lose weight and get sick.

Just an update...I had lost one of my Waitei this morning :hmm4: I had observed a small area on his skin that received an abrasion caused by coming in contact with a piece of LR a few days ago. The wound was nasty.

Anyway....what would be a recommended tank additive that would help in the healing of a wound. I didn't have anything on hand...not that it would have made a difference, but I think I want to keep something on hand for future use.

Anthias do seem susceptible to skin abrasions. I've lost a few this way, and no antibiotics have helped. Never lost any other kind of fish to one.

do a search for uronema and see if the wounds look like that. many anthias have been coming in with that.

Thanks for the advice!! My other two Waitei appear to be fine, and have been in the QT over a week past the date I lost the other fish.

Been reading more about uronema, and I think this may be a possibility. Needless to say these Anthias are not seeing my DT anytime soon. I will post back when I get more info.

Well...I spent a good chunk of last night reading more about the uronema disease. I would say that I am like 90% sure that it what my Waitei had. Here is a photobucket pic that I found online of what my fish looked like exactly.

I would say that within 48 hours of noticing the lesion, my fish expired. Now I am off the LFS to see if I can obtain some Metro and/or Acriflavine.

That's interesting. I've had something that looks exactly like that as well (as opposed to skin abrasions) on some of my anthias and it seems to respond OK to antibiotics (had it on 5 fish of which 3 survived, though one lost an eye).

Simon...what antibiotics did you use to treat your anthias that had a similar infection of picture that I posted.

I just dosed my QT with Seachem's MetroPlex. Carbon was removed and I added an air stone to increase Oxygen. Can I still run my skimmer during treatment, or will it decrease its effectiveness.
