Waiting on my Flame Angel

There isn't any sure fire way to sex flame angels. Typically males have pointed posterior edges on their dorsal and anal fins and have more blue.

How big is the angel right now? From the second picture you posted, it looks like it could be male since the fins look pointed... The other pictures don't show it very well, so I'm not sure if it is just the picture that shows it or if the fins are actually more pointed.

The angels will be female upon maturity and will change to male if the environmental conditions are right. A single angel will typically be a male if kept as the only angel for awhile. I'm not exactly sure on the time it takes to fully complete the change though.

AFAIK, this is the sure fire way to sex them (assuming they are sexually mature). Here is my (believed to be) male (not the best pic, but shows the pointed anal fin):

Ok, Mine is a young fish about 1 3/4 inches long. The anal fin does appear to be pointed out but not as dramatically as yours.

females tend to have a rounder anal fin while males have a pointy fin. Their black stripes on the fish also help, females have around four black stripes that are pretty thin while males have a few more that are bigger.

this picture explains it all:

Your flame angel looks a lot like the female in the pic.
Hopes this helps

Thanks for the info, It does look like a female in the picture but as I look at it in the QT, based on the picture in your example I would say male. The picture just isn't catching the blue in the anal and dorsal fins. It is also interesting because his/her right side looks like the female in the picture and the left side looks more like the male. Either way he/she is a young fish and Im sure hasn't fully developed gender yet.

I love this fish. I have one in my aquarium. They have so much personality. Mine was a bully from day one going into an established tank. He nipped at my acans on the first day and I tapped on the glass and scared it. It has not nipped at coral since then but I have made sure to keep it well fed. It did, however, rip the tail off of my royal gramma who had been in my tank for 8 months.

really wish these could live with CB's :S

Coral Beauty?... My flame and CB have been together for about 6 yrs (maybe more), and I've had other flames with CBs many times in the past 40 yrs...
4 yrs ago I added a second Flame, and a yr ago, I added 2 more flames...total 4 flames, 1 CB, 2 Multifasciatus, 3 swallowtails, 1 Bellus, and 1 Regal...I plan on removing a few tangs and adding more angels.

Wow, tell us about your tank and what has led to you success.

Seems that keeping a flame Angel and coral beauty is worse on paper than it is in reality. I hear more success stories than I do horror stories.

how about a short video, for now...it shows most of my ~80 fish, but i didn't notice the CB!
(if anyone sees it, Ill post another video as a reward...)

This is a great pic/info. I just ordered a mated pair of Flame Angels from Pacific Aqua. They are the Polynesian Flame Angels. they will be arriving on Tuesday.

I saw that pair and was a little tempted but passed. The male looked great in the pictures.

Out of sheer dumb luck I ended up with a male and a female flame angle for my ree. Both are doing very well in my 320 gal tank. They pick at the rock all day and also feed well when I feed the tank twice a day. I feed a combination of Ocean Plankton or Mysis shrimp plus a combination of flakes. I did know that Males are larger, have more bars and more blue rim on their fins. That was how I choose the two fish so I guess that it was not all luck.
My experiences with these fish is that they do much better in an establish reef. although they do eat prepared food, picking at the live rock is the best for them. I have a thriving 65 gal tank with a thriving Mandarin. Adding the flame angel, after a few months, resulting in starvation of the Mandarin to the point that I have to remove the Mandarin. More observation show that Flame angel really directly compete with a Mandarin for the same type of food. If anyone want to keep Flame Angle in a smallish tank, need to keep this in mind, especially if they also want to keep Mandarin.

Just put my new one in after three weeks in QT... hours before lights came on, everything seemed ok... Then my kole tang started being crazy aggressive towards him when the lights came on and flame was exploring. Was visible all day and now it's just gone. I have minimal rock work and can't find the fish anywhere. Overflow, sump, around the tank, etc...

This is weird...
