Wanna see red algae go bye bye!!

This is crazy guys

I'm with you there. Tried the rest of that and more with no luck.

At this point I would rather have the red cyno back then my current problem..

As for my current problem, I'm going to polyfilter, run carbon and 20% water changes get rid of all of the amonia & amquel.

I'll toss a small farm animal in a big volcano before repeating the series of events that have gotten me into this situation. The only reason I'm airing my stupidity is to keep someone else from the same.

He started with a couple large powerhead, then one that pushed 3000gl an hr . one week it was all gone

A 3000 gph powerhead? I'm not suprised that there was nothing left. I can't even imagine any water, sand or fish not being blown right out of the tank.

Appreciate your perspective, but my nitrates, nitrates, and ammonia consistently were at 0. Seems like changing out my white lights and adding some hermits are solving the cyano, but I still need to normal out my PH.

You are most likely getting cyano from nitrates being released from the bioballs. Using an antibiotic to treat it is normally only a short term fix, unless you get rid of the problem, the nitrates. Plus the antibiotics probably did a job on the good bacteria on the on the bioballs and can cause even more nitrates to be produced as they try to reestablish themselves. You need to addess the reason why you have the high waste load and solve that problem. You will always have high nitrates using bioballs, unless you cut the feeding to nearly zero and get ride of the fish. Bioballs do not denitrify.

But we don't know what you did to cause this problem. There are to many other people who have successfully used EM without any side effects at all.

Something else happened to cause this problem.

So you think that you can simulate storms in your tank? Sound kinda messy...

69vette, I agree. too many variables. I would like to know which one caused the issue.

high flow is not the answer. I have 4000 gph and the cyno was happily swaying in the current. It (the cyno) was doing a good job of holding the sand in place, now its gone, it blows around a bit.

Pulsating, strong current and a little water change.RO water to top off is usually (99 %) free of trace elements that are not wanted in the reef...
And yes I Do and I can duplicate a storm in my tanks .. i dont care which way the sand blows or where it lands ,It will come back around with proper water movement....

Well, the Maracyn treatment has eliminated the Cyano! I treated two tablets everyday for four days. That's wonderful in itself. I am concerned at how crazy my protein skimmer has gone since I've started it back up though. It's over flowing (it has a tube for overflow water built into it) into the OJ juice bottle (empty bottle we use for this purpose all the time) at an alarming rate. We have to empty the bottle about every 5-10 minutes. We did the 20% water change just a little while ago. I assume it's doing this because there still is a significant amount of medicine in the tank.

I'm hoping the protein skimmer slows down soon though. Watching it this close it crazy, but if we didn't we'd have a huge mess of water on the floor!

I take it this is a perfectly normal and hopefully good thing then?

BTW, we had to turn the skimmer off last night before we went to bed, so we could sleep without worry. It's on again now, and skimming just as wildly as it was last night.

*EDIT* Also wanted to note, I've had to replace a lot of water due to this, and had to buy more Instant Ocean this morning because I ran out. My salinity level had dropped quite a bit because of all the loss of water due to such exhuberant skimming!

**EDIT**Just turned the skimmer down so it's not skimming off as much. I had to. Replacing the water loss would be costing me a fortune otherwise. I hope this will be okay. Time will tell I guess.

I got rid of a small patch of cyano by introducing 12 ceriths and 12 Nassarius Vibrex snails in my 30 gallon. They took it out overnight. Some say they don't work but they sure worked for me. :D

That's great that you got the snailes to work, I bought some red-legged crabs, and more snails, and I don't think they did anything, dosed it with EM Tab's for a week, and bye bye it went......that was over 2 months ago.

I really beleive this stuff works....

OMG i love you...now i have proof for my parents that bio-balls are evil and produceing the cayno! I LOVE U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this has been an endless battle tht has now come to an end!

Wow, I must say this work perfectly. My RO/DI filters gone bad, and I didn't have a chance to replace it yet. I have read the post closely and decided to give it a try. I bought Maracyn from ebay. With only two dose, after 7 days, all cyano completely disappeared. I must say this is a good quick fix to deal with cyano.

I dosed 3 tablets on my 75 gal reef tank w/ 20 gal sump on the first day. Then dosed 3 more on the second days. The third day, I did 10 gal water change and siphoned out the dead cyano. The next day, I hardly found any trace of cyano. Today, the fourth day after my second dose, the sand is still looking white like it should be. Thank Kim.

Anyway, how many after the treatment, your skimmer returns back to normal? ... Mine is still going crazy.... :) .. Maybe I should do another water change.

Just to double check Red slime blankets what it is on. Produces bubbles. Seems almost like a layer of snot maybe? If so then I have that going nuts. My tank is only a few weeks old so I might try to dose it and see if I can't get rid of it. Does it sound like I have cyano?

Yes.... your red snot sounds like cyano. Do not dose your tank to get rid of it. Allow your tank to go through a normal cycle for at least 4 to 6 weeks. It will clear itself up. Cyano is just another form of bacteria. It will go away naturally as the tank stabilizes.

Bio overload. that was my problem when i started in this hobby some 11 yrs ago ..... Hobby? no now i think its a life style.... you have to change to meet the requirements of the marine aquarium....... Hum ..... I am i making sence here ...HeHe...

The tank has been up for 24 days. The rock as been curing for about 6 weeks or so. I ran into a stand problem and pulled the tank down but kept the rock and sand going in a rubbermaid tub. The slime is on everything. Even starting to grow on the snail shells it looks like. I have moved my power head around for better flow but it isn't helping. The slime just waves in the current. I have siphoned the stuff out every other day or so but is starting to cost a pretty penny on replacement water. I am using RODI water from my LFS so it should be fairly good. I am also have activated carbon in one of the chambers in the back, I have a JBJ 24 DX. After reading this post and seeing how dosing worked for most everyone else. I think I would rather try that then sucking this stuff up every other day for the next few months.
