When I first started my tank (~5 months ago) I used egg crate to cover my tank with my main intention of allowing heat to escape while keeping my fish in the tank. I've noticed over 5 months that my tank receives more light w/o the egg crate covering and I was thinking of removing it. However, I'm not sure if my fish are known to jump from the tank. Here's the list of fish I have. Tell me if you think they'll jump or not:

1 Royal Gramma
1 Six-Line Wrasse
2 Bangaii Cardinals
1 Desjardini Sailfin Tang

I have had a Gramma for years and Desjardini for a year and they have never jumped.
Unsure about the wrasse.

I had a clown jump but not my wrasse. And i still wont put egg create. Never have and never will. If they are stuid enought to do it i dont want them in my tank anyways. It serves them right. Basterds.

In my experience/opinion, all fish are potential jumpers. I would say you are pretty safe taking the eggcrate off though. Nothing on your list sticks out in my mind as especially a jumper.

You can get the silver painted egg crate from Home Depot. IMO it increases the light by reflecting it.

Try turning your egg crate 'upsidedown'. One side is usually better than the other.

LOL:lol:

Well we learn somthing everyday. Not sure how much difference that will make. Probley not much and stil agree to just remove it.

Egg Crate Material Reference Lighting
Hi Steven,
Just a comment about using egg crate material to cover the tank instead of glass covers. I read somewhere a few years back, that an enterprising student studied the effect of egg crate material on light and discovered by turning the egg crate upside down (opposite of the way they use it in elevators and office buildings) it increased the fluorescent light intensity by almost 30%. Don't know if its true, but I thought I would share. Paul E. Proue of St. Joe Beach, FL
<It is definitely true. Egg crate has distinct top and bottom sides. If you look closely you will notice that there is a slight taper to the plastic. Used one way it blocks out light, the other way it focuses the available light. -Steven Pro>

Just to make it easier to read.

Dana Riddle did a study on eggcrate and its ability to increase the amount of light going into a tank. This was at the 2nd Louisville MACNA, I believe.

It is important to note that Dana's study was not done using eggcrate sitting on the tank as a fish jumping blocker. Instead, the eggcrate material would be where you usually see thin acrylic or glass used on a light fixture as a splash guard. It is here that the eggcrate when oriented pointed up that it can focus more light straight down and into the tank versus unfocused some of the light spills out into the surrounding room and onto the floor.
