Want a new fish - looking for suggs

I got a gift certificate to DFS for Christmas. I wasn't planning on using it until Spring when the temps were a bit nicer, but since it feels like Spring right now I think it's time to get a new tank inhabitant.

It's a $50 gift certificate, so I'm looking at fish that are less expensive than that or just a little over. Not looking to spend $200 on a fish just yet.

Current tank inhabitants:

Desjardini Tang
Foxface
YWG
Blue Chromis X 3
Firefish X 3
Urchins X 2
misc crabs and snails
4 GBTA

Corals are mostly LPS and polyps. One SPS who has decided he can live in my sub-par water.

Thinking leapord wrasse, blue jaw trigger, puffer. Something interesting.

And go!

I think a pygmy angel makes a good addition to any tank. They have a reputation for being among the most reef safe of the angels. They don't get that large, full of personality, and are cute and colored very vibrantly. They are very active. Always swimming around and definitely not shy. They eat pretty much whatever you put in the tank and are very hardy. I normally see them for around $35.

As an added bonus, they love to graze on algae and will help keep your tank clean.

I had mine for about 4 months before he went carpet surfing. He left my corals alone.(I feed heavily and that may have helped) He was just a fat & happy little fish until he met his demise. I was actually bummed for a few days afterwards. He was the star of my tank. I plan to get another as soon as I fashion a proper cover for my bowfront.

I had a pygmy angle once, it ate some of my softies and ****ed off my snowflake eel and got itself eaten

From your list, I think a blue jaw trigger would be pretty awesome as well. They are on my stocking list for my 180 gallon build. Depending upon size, you might have trouble finding one for $50 or less. A lot of the ones I see are in the $65+ price range.

In addition to eating coral, a lot of puffers also have an appetite for snails and shrimp. I think they are really cool, just not good for a reef.

I'll add a vote for the blue jaw. I had one but lost it a year ago when my tank crashed. I'm actually picking up a new pair this weekend.

Just looked at DFS and they don't have any in stock. They have one in the Diver's Den, but it's a male and they want $129 for him.

I used to have a Coral Beauty and he was a great fish. Never touched any of my corals. But I understand I was pretty lucky. I like the dwarf angels, but I think there's a reason DFS says reef safe with caution.

I'm going to spend some time on DFS tonight looking. Keep the ideas coming.

I have one more suggestion, a red spotted hawkfish. I would never have a tank without one. Incredible personality.

Absolutely. The red spotted is one of the few hawkfish that is reef friendly. He doesn't hurt a thing and has the personality of a puppy dog.

Would his crabs and snails be safe with one of those?

As usual I had the exception. My old red spotted hawk now is a resident in nooks 120. It was a great fish in 2 other tanks i had it in over the years. In my 120 it started killing other fish. In nooks tank its a perfect resident :bounce2:

You give nook a lot of nice fish lol

My potter angel has been very good in my tank, but like most say it's hit or miss. You just have to keep an eye on them.

I put my 11 yr old on this task last night. Here are her suggestions:

Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tang
Freckled Hawkfish
Orchid Dottyback
Azure Damsel
Tobacco Basslet
Striped Blenny

And she really likes the Curious Wormfish. Everything I've read about them says they're good in a reef tank. I think they're related to the engineer gobies, but I haven't heard if they burrow the same way. Not much info about them otherwise. Very tempted to try him at $35.
